We should have bought this one though - darn shame that we didn't.

We opted for the Corvette instead of the Miata. Should have bought a mix.

Sometimes I get Freep Mail and email from lurkers who want to know what value I get from my monthly pledge to Free Republic.

It is really amazing the value of real return we get from our donations and monthly pledges to Free Republic.

Here is an example of a dream that became a project and is now a reality thanks to Free Republic.

This sign just north of Medford, Oregon on I5 North is a prime example of Freepers activating themselves.

I started a series of Oregon is Burning or Oregon is Still Burning threads this summer during the massive fires due to the agendas of the Enviral Whackos.

A group in Oregon and those out of Oregon who knew what was happening had more good news and data about those fires than any other place. They shared that news, data and strong feelings with the rest of us on Free Republic on those threads re Oregon is Burning.

One day, Ebuck came up with the concept of putting a bill board up to let the public know who was responsible. Immediately, a Freeper who wants to be unknown and lives a long way from Oregon, pledged a month's cost of that sign to get it going. Ebuck and others worked out the details of the signs. A small group of us pledged enough to put that bill board up for a couple of months. The money came from all over Free Republic.

This sign has to be fitting like a huge fishbone in the throats of the Watermelon Jihadists Greens in Oregon. We have them in a vulnerable spot.

This could only happen on Free Republic. This is why every Freeper should pledge at least 17 cents per day to keep Free Republic strong and alive. Just throw your daily change in a container each night. 17 cents per night is easily obtained. That is equal to a massive $5/month pledge.

This is what happens on Free Republic. If we had 5,000 Freepers donating $5/month or 17 cents per day to Free Republic, we would have bill boards like this all over America pounding the left wingers on agendas never given a chance by the left wing mediots in this country.

17 cents each month of your treasure loaned to you by God is all it takes to pledge $5/month. Can you imagine a 100 billboards up in America, whacking the left wing maggots where it really hurts them. Then save and donate 17 cents per day to enable these things to happen.

Last evening as the Breeders Cup Challenge game was winding down, folks were asking about a photo of Ruffian.

I found a nice one this morning. Here she is, and here is an edited version of her tragic story.

Ruffian

Full Story Here

by Kathleen Jones
snip ...

A crowd of over 50,000 assembled at Belmont Park on the 6th of July to witness what all felt would be a terrific and well-fought battle between champions.

Foolish Pleasure bounded from the gate with his head in front, but Ruffian quickly sprinted up from the inside and stuck her head in front. Despite bearing out and brushing with the colt five times in the opening stages, she increased her margin over Foolish Please to about a half length as the pair approached the turn. The crowd was cheering loudly as the match appeared to be meeting their greatest expectations. But as the pair, still linked side-by-side, approached the mile marker, there was a sound which both jockeys described later as being "like the breaking of a board", and the great match was over.

Ruffian was pulled up; her off-fore sesamoid bones were shattered. Baeza and Foolish Pleasure were suddenly alone, and the jockey eased the Derby winner to a canter to complete the course, as soon as he realized what had happened.

The once-cheering crowd now watched in stricken silence as the ambulance sped toward the filly and veterinarians attended to her. Heroic efforts were made to save Ruffian, although the early prognosis gave her only a 10% chance of survival. A pneumatic cast was applied before she was loaded onto the ambulance and another was applied in the barn area. A team of four vets and an orthopaedic surgeon laboured for a total of 12 hours to accomplish the impossible. During the operation, Ruffian was twice revived after she had stopped breathing. Finally the surgery was done.

However, the worst was yet to come. The anesthesia wore off and the filly awoke, disoriented, confused, and in pain. She thrashed about wildly despite the attempts of several attendants to hold her down. She fractured the new cast and caused even greater damage to the fetlock. Knowing that she could not endure further surgery, the veterinarians put her mercifully to sleep.

snip ...

Thus Ruffian and the pair which produced her were taken from us by an eerie and tragic set of circumstances. Although her career spanned only a shade over 13 months, and until that match she had only raced against her own gender, Ruffian is usually included in anyone's list of all-time great runners. She was not only unbeaten until her injury, she was also never headed in any race. She set a new stakes record in each of the eight stakes races which she won. She raced successfully from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/2 miles with an average winning margin of 8 1/3 lengths.

Ruffian is buried near the flagpole at her home track of Belmont Park - the site of her first race where she blazed boldly onto the racing scene, and the site of her final race where a hundred thousand eyes watched her brilliant flame flicker out

What a heart Ruffian had. I'm glad I learned about her champion spirit last night and today. Thank you.

I don't have many horse pictures, but here's one

How 'bout FreeperPETathon II?

FreeperPETathon was so cool that I'll donate $5 for FreeperPet pix from those Freepers who missed the first PETathon, up to a total of $50.

Participation is limited to the next nine (libertygirl is #1) Freepers who didn't participate in the first PETathon. $5 is per Freeper, not per picture (sorry, I wish it could be more!). Please make sure to post your reply to me so that it will be easier for me to find the pictures!

I have to leave for the evening, but will be back tomorrow.
