NEW YORK (AP) - Is CNN Headline News down with it?
The cable network is trying, judging from an effort emanating from its executive suite to think young.
CNN Headline News general manager Rolando Santos told the San Francisco Chronicle this week that he's looking to mix "the lingo of our people" words like "whack" and "ill" into newscasts to attract young people.
And the New York Daily News on Wednesday quoted from an e-mail sent by a network manager to his headline writers, sending them a copy of a slang dictionary so they can be "as cutting edge" as possible.
"Please use this guide to help all you homeys and honeys add a new flava to your tickers and dekkos," the message said, referring to graphics on the Headline News screen.
The list of phrases included "fly," meaning sexually attractive.
Santos said Thursday that the e-mail was designed to point out resources that might help headline writers.
"The e-mail was informational, not a policy or directive from me," Santos said. "With that said, I should point out that I want the language used in our tickers and dekkos to be real, current and relevant to the people who watch us."
CNN underwent a makeover a year ago to add busy graphics to make its screen look like a computer screen. Its ratings have been improving among young viewers.
I almost feel sorry for them.
What did he do, ask both of them what changes they'd like to see? He's got a huge problem with trying to finally associate "relevent" with CNN, however. It won't work this time, either.
What would be "hip-hop" for Hillary, Lott, Dashcle, etc.?
Headline News hot for hip hop phrases
CNN Headline News wants to get jiggy with it.
Get ready for slang phrases like "bling-bling," "flava," and "freak" mixed in with the day's headlines as the AOL Time Warner-owned cable network turns to hip hop lingo to rope in younger viewers.
"In an effort to be sure we are as cutting-edge as possible with our on-screen persona, please refer to this slang dictionary when looking for just the right phrase," reads an internal Headline News memo obtained by the Daily News.
"Please use this guide to help all you homeys and honeys add a new flava to your tickers and dekos," the memo continues, referring to the graphics that appear on the busy Headline News screen.
On the CNN pick list of hip hop phrases: "jimmy hat" meaning condom, "fly" for sexually attractive, and "ill," meaning to act inappropriately.
A Headline News spokeswoman said the memo was sent out by a mid-level producer to the attention of graphics writers and that top execs knew nothing about it.
Earlier this week, Headline News chief Rolando Santos told the San Francisco Chronicle that he is working slang phrases - "the lingo of our people" - into his newscasts.
The network, which went through an ambitious revamp, wants to grab the younger demographic of 18-49-year-olds who command the highest ad rates. In September, Headline News overtook GE-owned MSNBC in 18-49-year-olds for the second month in a row.
But some are bristling at the Headline News rap. "There's nothing more ridiculous than people trying to act hipper than they are," said Andrew Tyndall, editor of the Tyndall Report, which monitors TV news.

Oops! My mistake. "Bling-Bling," not "Jing-Jing" is the hip-hop phrase for "money." I guess I'm not into the lastest hip-hop talk. I thought "Bling-Bling" meant what Clinton was doing in the Oval Office to that Mondale chick.
Followed by:
"The e-mail was informational, not a policy or directive from me," Santos said. "With that said, I should point out that I want the language used in our tickers and dekkos to be real, current and relevant to the people who watch us."
When a boss says "please use this guide," it isn't informational, it's directive.
A Headline News spokeswoman said the memo was sent out by a mid-level producer to the attention of graphics writers and that top execs knew nothing about it.
So will we now be seeing a cartoon character called "Jimmy Hat" delivering the news on CNN?
