  Paris mayor stabbed
October 06, 2002

PARIS Mayor Bertrand Delanoe was stabbed in the stomach by an unknown assailant in the town hall early today, where many people had gathered for a cultural event, sources in his entourage said.

The mayor was conscious when he was rushed to hospital by ambulance with a wound to the right side of the stomach.

The extent of his wounds and the nature of the weapon used to attack him were not immediately known. Nor was there any immediate word on the identity or whereabouts of the assailant.

The attack took place around 2am (1000 AEST) during Paris's first "White Night" cultural celebrations which drew thousands onto the streets and into the capital's museums and other cultural venues.

Thousands made their way during the night to the large square outside the Hotel de Ville, the mayor's grand town hall near the River Seine.

I can't believe it took 11 posts for some one to question the existence of a Mayor of France. Good job.

All "was he surrendering" joke questions aside, the real question is:

Garden variety nutcase, or a member of the Religion of Peace on the march in their first Western European target country?
