The unidentified suspect, who was arrested immediately, told authorities he was a devout Muslim and had acted out of opposition to politicians and gays. Investigators don't think he's linked to any fundamentalist groups.

The French, especially the Parisians, have been quick to defend Arabs, including their Arab residents, against any sort of trouble ... such as Brigette Bardot's complaints about Arab mistreatment of animals. But trying to kill an elected official because of Islamic sensitivities may exceed even the French levels of tolerance.

The mayor urged his assistant to make sure the "Nuit Blanche," or "Sleepless Night" celebrations...

Yesterday in an article about this stabbing I saw "nuit blanche" translated as "white night", which is the literal translation. Now I'm seeing "sleepless night".

Question for French speakers: is "nuit blanche" an idiomatic expression meaning "sleepless night"?
