WASHINGTON -- Several clues, including discovery in Iraq of equipment labeled "smallpox," indicate the deadly virus could be part of Saddam Hussein's biological weapons arsenal, although the Bush administration has offered no public evidence to prove it.

In 1994, U.N. inspectors at an Iraqi medical complex found a freeze-dryer labeled "smallpox" in Arabic, said former inspector Jonathan Tucker.

It's probably for baby milk.

"The official U.S. position, shared by other experts, is that it's unclear whether Iraq has the smallpox virus or, if it does, has the delivery technology to use it as a weapon."
What a harebrained position to take!

It has been suggested many times--and by a number of posters here at FR--that the virus can be obtained, e.g. exhumation of the body of someone who died of smallpox et al., and that the only "delivery technology" needed is a suicidal fanatic willing to be injected with the virus before embarking on an airline tour.

"'I have no doubt in my mind that Iraq does have the smallpox virus,' said Dr. Ken Alibek, a top official in the former Soviet Union's biological weapons program before defecting to the United States in 1992.

"U.N. weapons inspectors and U.S. intelligence agencies have found several clues suggesting Iraq might have the smallpox vaccine."

It is wise to assume that Saddam has the smallpox virus and that he is willing to use it.

A man like Saddam would be willing to unleash it on the world as an act of war or as a final act of vengeance and destruction before he is destroyed.

If he should unleash it, it would sweep across the globe. The people of the developed world would be most likely to survive, since therein exists the only possibility of vaccinating large populations in time to save them. One third of the undeveloped world could be expected to die. This of course would not deter a man like Saddam from releasing the virus as a final act, if he so chose.

The U.S. should proceed with plans to vaccinate the population as quickly as possible.

Serious consideration should be given to developing techniques of immunizing immunocompromised individuals passively--i.e. injecting into them pre-formed anti-variola antibodies--to protect them from the vaccine as well as the disease.

Saddam may have it, but there's a serious dearth of evidence, and the chances are he doesn't. If he had smallpox in his program, why didn't Hussein Kamil reveal that after his defection in 1995? Kamil would know, right? That doesn't make sense to me.

Kamil would know, right?

Why would a physicist know about the details of the biological and chemical warfare programs. If I were Saddam Hussein, I would make sure knowledge of my WMD programs was compartmentalized.

Hussein Kamel was not a phycisist. He was Saddam's son-in-law, and he ran Saddam's CBW program. He's the reason we know what went on in that program.

Here's a backgrounder for you.
