Maybe I'm too cautious, but if I go to the door late at night I have a .357 magnum in my hand behind my back.

Right.

When the Mexicans whose car just broke down (no, I'm not making an ethnic slur, it happens repeatedly out here) knock on the door late at night, my wife answers the door. Meanwhile, I've crept out the *back* door and am standing out in the pool of darkness behind their backs with a loaded .45. (Don't worry, white people get the same treatment).

This incident sounds like a home invasion, though (and most places don't have the convenience of a back door and a pool of darkness). Incidents like this have convinced me that there must be a loaded firearm concealed but accessable in the house at all times. Closet hangers, book safes, fake wall panels, etc. etc. are all good options.

You will not have time to get the gun-grabber-mandated safe open - in fact, you won't even have time to get to the safe...

A box of stiff steak knives is also a good investment, because they can be left "hidden at hand" around your house, garage etc for the unexpected.
