Anti-Terrorist Muslim cleric and Regional lawmaker assassinated in Russian republic bordering Chechnya

VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia - A lawmaker in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, which borders on Chechnya (news - web sites), was shot and killed in his car, an official said Wednesday.

Magomed-Bashir Aushev and his driver were found dead on Tuesday night in the village of Surkhakhi, about 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of the regional capital Nazran, said Madina Khadziyeva, a police spokeswoman.

Aushev, who was also a Muslim cleric, was a pro-Russian member of Ingushetia's regional assembly. Two days before his death, in comments broadcast on local television, he denounced a recent attack by Chechen rebels on the Ingush village of Galashki.

The attack left 17 Russian soldiers and dozens of rebels dead, according to Russian officials, and marked a widening of the Chechen war into Ingush territory.
