WASHINGTON - Hundreds of undocumented immigrants from across the United States rallied near the White House on Wednesday to demand legalization of their status.
Carrying signs bearing slogans such as "Yes, We Can," "Recognize our Work" and "Legalization Today," nearly 1,000 immigrants and union leaders gathered in Washington's Freedom Plaza to ask Congress and the administration for amnesty.
Leaders of the immigrant groups, made up mostly of Hispanics, symbolically presented to House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) one million signatures collected from 40 states demanding legalization for undocumented immigrants. They also plan to present copies to the White House.
Gephardt said he will introduce a bill in the House on Thursday to legalize undocumented immigrants.
The House minority leader vowed to fight for the bill's approval along with his party, although he warned that attempts to liberalize immigration laws face a difficult time in Congress in the current political climate.
All the initiatives favoring undocumented immigrants in Congress were shelved as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
A SERIOUS QUESTION: Are Democrats Pro-America? (Hint: The answer can be found in their words, actions, and reactions.)
Can you say reparations?
Maybe we can just hand each illegal a $10 million check as he crosses the border....
According to this story, they are now gathering together, admitting their violation of the law and protesting in a convenient spot for mass arrest!
They broke into the country, they think we owe them something and they are giving all of us legal American citizens the finger!
Talk about provocation! Arrest them and throw them out, NOW!
Move 'em out, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, head 'em up, Rawhide!
Head 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em out, Rawhide!
Is it just me? While they had 'em all in one place, why didn't they simply load 'em on a bus and deport them? Saves you the trouble of going out and looking for them.
Gephardt would probably think that is a good idea. Also, what is the lifetime cost to the American taxayer of each illegal in terms of health care, food stamps, public schools, other social services, etc. etc. It is a very big number. Gephardt has never been more blatant. If they vote democrat, bring in as many illegals as possible.
Also, both parties not only lack the will, but actively frustrate the will of the majority of Americans who want the illegals deported. The INS should have rounded up all of those attending the rally and, once verified as illegal, deported each and every one of them. But (sigh), it will never happen. The activities of the INS and the Border Patrol and largely just for show and and only catch a fraction of the illegals on purpose.
