Despite Some Discrimination, There Are Many Advantages Associated With LGBTQ Life
October 10, 2002
TO THE EDITOR:
Whenever people discuss gay rights, some anti-gay voice will argue that gays and lesbians don't deserve equal rights. This viewpoint begs the question -- why would anyone choose an identity that brings with it hate crimes and discrimination? But I've found so many good reasons to be gay.
Gays have better music. Disco and electronica have deep roots in the gay club scene. Gay bars are generally more entertaining than straight ones. Gay clubs feature strip shows, live singers, rock musicals, amateur and professional female impersonators and -- most importantly -- the dance floor. How liberating, how free, what fun! And don't forget lesbian music. Lesbians dominate the folk rock scene. Artists like Melissa Etheridge have strong lesbian support.
Another great part of gay life is the sex. The superiority of gay sex to straight sex should be self-evident. If parts of your body could give you tremendous amounts of pleasure, then it'd only be logical for you to figure out how to use those parts. Coming to grips with your sexuality helps you realize what you like and hate. You become open to new sexual ideas.
My favorite reason to be gay, however, involves gender roles. One of the first questions people ask expectant mothers is, "Boy or girl?" Once we know the gender, we make several assumptions about the baby's life. Will the nursery be pink or blue? People expect certain behaviors from each gender.
But not everyone is going to fit into their gender expectations. Many males like pink, and many women hate makeup. And society ostracizes gender nonconformists. But the gay community is much more accepting. If a gay man puts on a little makeup or occasionally wears a dress, no one bats an eye. And it's cool for lesbians to keep their hair short, be huge sports fans and wear plaid.
Gender freedom also benefits gays in relationships. In a traditional heterosexual relationship, the man is the bill-payer, while the female plays a much more supportive role, like keeping the house.
But in queer relationships, who does what is much less clear. Everything is open for negotiation. This leaves many opportunities for fairness and equality, benefiting everyone in the relationship. With so many advantages, why not choose homosexuality?

The superiority of gay sex to straight sex should be self-evident.This is a joke, right? Because nobody walks in LA.
Let me see if I have this right. As a straight male, who engages in intercourse with a female I am unable to "figure out how to use those parts."
There'll be hell to pay when your local GLAAD chapter reads this, kid. You don't choose to be gay, you just are.
Yep, the straight ones. The gay ones like brown!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Is this argument logical and valid? Lets see if it is.
Whenever people discuss rapists rights, some anti-rapist voice will argue that rapists and child molesters don't deserve equal rights. This viewpoint begs the question -- why would anyone choose an identity that brings with it hate crimes and discrimination? But I've found so many good reasons to be a rapist.
I'll bet the killer near washington D.C. has what he thinks are very good reasons for killing people.
I havent paid a bill in over 6 years. And my wife would be hard pressed to find the kitchen or the vaccum cleaner. I love my Rainbow!
But in queer relationships, who does what is much less clear. Everything is open for negotiation. This leaves many opportunities for fairness and equality, benefiting everyone in the relationship.
What century was this written in?
I had to stop reading right there.
Can someone name for me, just one right that gay people do not have that straight people do? And stick to "rights", not wants, desires, it would be nice if..., etc...

Aha! You're forgetting something. Liberal "logic" changes with circumstances in order to support whatever nutzoid cause-of-the-moment. Libs will argue that being queer is genetically based and unalterable when it suits them and then turn around in the next breath and call it a choice also when it suits them. This is normal argument style for libs. Then when faced with real logic that shows them to be utterly wrong they descend into ad hominem attacks.
It's 2002, and this guy thinks Disco's the bomb... need we say more?
Gay bars are generally more entertaining than straight ones.
I'll give him this one, because it is way more entertaining to be in a gay/lesbian bar... no doubt, but not for the reasons he probably thinks.
That was too good.
Note the wording here. Forgetting who is male and who is female is good for everyone in the the relationship, not both. Get it?
