[history]
WASHINGTON - The number of Hispanics who dropped out or never attended high school surged by over 50 percent in the 1990s, especially in Arizona and other states in the South and West, where many schools struggled to accommodate the fast-growing Spanish-speaking population.

That's good news!!! (sarcasm)
We'll have a third world workforce ready when the Chinese come back and set up industries here one day in the future.
(As industry continues to go to China now, continually raising their standard of living... While our society steadily declines until we become a third world country)

How many of these kids are here illegally?

"It's not going to be cheap to educate these kids," he said. Expanding English as a Second Language funding and creating more flexible class scheduling may also help, said Richard Fry, a researcher with the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center."
Now if he could have just qualified exactly who "these kids" are then that would have been a profound admission.

I don't see how throwing money at the problem will help at all. We've got a huge drop out problem here and it's because most of the parents never went to school themselves, they move from Mexico into the projects, get food stamps and a fat welfare check and never see the need for their kids to attend school. Truancy rates even in the early grades are high because the mothers don't really care if their kids go to school.

"It is school-related. If a child is doing well in school, if he or she feels part of the school, they are not going to drop out," he said.
Not necessarily true. I was an Air Force brat, and the frequent moves made it difficult to feel a 'part of' a school, yet the thought of dropping out was foreign to me.
Actually, if I think again about it, what
really kept me in school was knowing that mom and dad would kick my a$$ into another time zone had I even entertained the thought of dropping out.
{thanks mom and daddy!}

All the ingredients of a crime wave of epic proportions.
I hope the first victims on the list are the ones that made all this illegal immigration possible.

Good question. Another question...how many of them *have* anchor babies.

That's the only thing that will change this group's attitude about education also. End welfare so they have to work and they'll find out why an education matters in this country.

Yup, ditto for me. Lived all over G-d's creation and never once thought about dropping out. My parents would have kicked MY behind into another time zone as well. (I'd like to see statistics for *other* non English speaking first generation immigrant kids while we're at it...to gauge the 'foreign speaking school makes me feel bad' excuses feasibility...did the Vietnamese and Chinese and Korean kids have similar problems?)

A lot of the illegal supporters here either live in gated communities or in flyover country not affected by large illegal immigration yet. Sadly, those supporting and encouraging it seem to live the farthest removed from the realities of it.

You guys have to get with the program.
Repeat this 10 times a day
- They just want a better life
- They are good family oriented people
- They will vote Republican
- They will grow up and be good conservative Americans
- We need them here to make our businesses run
- We love Mexico - Mexico is our friend
- We honeymooned in Mexico - it is a wonderful country
- We get such cheap produce because of their work
- Everyone I see has a hammer or tool in his hand???(or knife or gun)
- There are just more important things to think about right now than these poor hard-working people
- Diversity is a good thing
- Americans are just too lazy and ignorant to work
- That's for starters - you can add more.
I can tell you feel better already.

End welfare so they have to work. . .And end bi-lingual education so they can learn English. How can get jobs if they don't speak the language.

That's the problem with Hispanics. They would rather work in the fields picking lettuce than go to school. That's fine if that's what they want. We need people to do that.
Stop throwing money at people who see no value in an education. There is a place for them, and if they accept that, let it be.
