The MOST similar case to the current sniper spree was a guy named Thomas Dillon, who killed 5 hunters and fishermen randomly in Ohio in the early 90s. Still some important differences (he didn't kill as many in a short period of time, not in a metro area) etc.

The FBI profilers nailed him perfectly with their profile, and he turned out to be exactly what the profile was; a white male gun enthusiast, he shot so much he ruined his hearing. Also drove around randomly shooting hundreds and hundreds of cats and dogs before he turned to humans.

The only other long-rifle guys who killed serially I'm aware of are the Long Island guy (another white guy, I believe he did it to cover up the one person he did intend to kill..have to research that one more.)

There was a guy in DC previously who was randomly killing serially with a shotgun, who turned out to be a schizophrenic black male.
