THERE are few things more repugnant to a soldier than a coward who claims to speak on his behalf.

This has to be the best opening line in an essay I've read in a while. As a quote I think it stands up very nicely.

Peters is a fine writer generally, and he's produced a handful of enduring epigrams. Another of my favorites, from his novel The War in 2020, is:
"Self-pity has ruined more good men than all the bad women that ever lived."

Now that's talent.
