How many times are critics of George W. Bush's war on terror going to get it wrong?
Recently we've been hearing - ad nauseam - that rather than fighting terrorism, the U.S. should be asking itself why it was attacked on Sept. 11 and why so much of the world hates it.
The corollary to this twisted thinking is that if you don't poke a stick in the eyes of the terrorists, they'll leave you alone - a popular idea among Canada's left-wing chattering classes.
Well, tell it to Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country which has been avoiding a crackdown on Islamic terrorists and has now paid a terrible price with the deadly bombings in the resort island of Bali that killed more than 180.
Indonesian authorities have long denied there were any Islamic terrorist cells in their country (sound familiar, Canada?). They dismissed warnings from the U.S. as propaganda and the urgings of Singapore and Malaysia for a crackdown since Muslim extremists want to combine the three countries into an Islamic state.
All this was apparently based on the idea of not offending Indonesia's Muslim majority.
Now, even Indonesian Defence Minister Matori Abdul Djalil has said the explosions show the presence of al-Qaida in Indonesia. But the point has been made at a terrible cost - failing to fight terrorism doesn't protect you from it.
Yesterday, according to Qatar's al-Jazeera TV, Osama bin Laden himself praised last week's terrorist bombing of a French supertanker off Yemen, which killed one crewman.
That attack shows the lunacy of those who argue that Bush is increasing the chances of another attack on the U.S. by threatening Iraq.
France, a UN Security Council member, has opposed any unilateral U.S. action against Iraq and wants to water down any UN resolution calling for the use of force against it if it fails to co-operate with UN inspectors. And despite that, Muslim terrorists target a French ship?
How many more deaths before the America haters admit it? The root cause of terrorism is terrorists. You cannot reason with terrorists.
You either fight them or simply live in fear, waiting for the next explosion.
Especially as election day approaches...
