Pentagon may get involved in sniper hunt
CNN

Posted on 10/15/2002 9:15:21 AM PDT by newsperson999

CNN just reported that the Pentagon is drawing up plans for recon equipment and troops working side by side with the FBI and local police to help find the sniper. The order may be signed later today. This will be very touchy becuase the military cannot be used for domestic law use

This makes me suspicious that the gov't thinks it's Al Qaeda related.

Why is this not a Homeland Security Department issue instead of the Pentagon?

I would think this would be right up the Homeland Security alley.

Sure looks like the feds think so. I don't think that the military would get involved if they thought the sniper went by the name "John" or "Bubba".

Why is it the Pentagon's responsibility to help the FBI and local law enforcement? I'm confused.

Something to do with the last federal employee union contract.

The only reason I can think of is if they think it is Al Qaeda related. Otherwise it doesn't make sense at all.

Here we go down the slippery slope to a military dictatorship.

"Something to do with the last federal employee union contract."

I would hope that you reply is sarcasm, but I am afraid that it is not.

No...what you're seeing is that the regular Joe in America is not worthy of this kind of effort. Because the latest victim was a government employee, the full force of the US military will have to be brought to bear. Nevermind that it violates the constitution.

On the Beltway threads, people have called for the use of the state National Guards to assist--closing off entrances & exits to the I roads, for example. Did the news reports say exactly how the military was going to be used?

Unless they know it's illegal ME terrorists. Then it could be differant. They enemy would just be on our soil.

OTHERWISE, if they don't know for sure these guys are ME terrosists, there's a big problem here. I wouldn't want the military being used as police in my back yard. Imagine if Clinton were still president. Every Christian would be dead, and all arms confiscated. Voting rights for Republicans would be eliminated, like in Iraq.
