Here we go down the slippery slope to a military dictatorship........

I don't see it that way. We are facing the possibility of having to hunt down Saddam. This is an excellent way to provide realistic training for those involved in survellence services.

Posse Comitatus anyone??

Bush and Ashcroft have been for months rumbling about a repeal of that inconvenience.

This will be very touchy becuase the military cannot be used for domestic law use

Touchy? It's un-American and illegal. But breaking the law and blatant disregrard for our constitution is en Vogue.

The wave of a finger by a government officials is all that's needed anymore.

Only, it's forbidden by the constitution. But hell...screw the constitution and liberty...we're at WHAR..

The unions don't want to put their members at risk? They want battle pay? They want overtime after 6 1/2 hrs.?

Maybe the feds should concentrate on how the shooters got from Seven Corners to (somehwere nearby) without touching a major highway.

By the way, it would be most helpful if they started calling them by their real names, terrorists.

"Nevermind that it violates the constitution" Nothing in the Constitution prohibits the military from enforcing the law or helping L.E. The posse comitatus act was passed to end Reconstruction, in the deal that broke the tied election of 1876. The dems and pubbies agreed that Ben Harrison would be President in exchange for the end of Reconstruction in the South.

I was thinking the same thing. from what i understand, it is legal for the Executive to order the national guard within US borders. Nixon did it at Kent and Jackson state...not good results. Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne into Little Rock to protect the first integrated students. IF the pentagon is actually thinking of deploying the army or some type of special opps, then we start entering the danger zone. Good to know that those of us in Montgomery county are going to have military escorts. or not

No...what you're seeing is that the regular Joe in America is not worthy of this kind of effort. Because the latest victim was a government employee, the full force of the US military will have to be brought to bear. Nevermind that it violates the constitution.

Blah, blah, blah...

It's un-American and illegal.

First we see the Congress give the President the power to attack any nation he wishes without getting their prior approval, now we see the dictator moving his troops into play on our own soil. And people are rationalizing this and see a dictator 6 thousand miles in the distance as more of a threat. The propaganda machine is nothing if not effective.

That's true. The article does not say how the military could be used. They may just become look-outs, for chains of communication for the FBI. This may actually be the wisest thing to do right now.
Until we know how they'd be used, I see no problem here .

I would think if were Al Qaeda related that they would have numerous snipers in different cities around the country doing this, not just in one location.

Just like on 9-11 they had numerous planes that they were planning on hijaking and hiting different targets.

Why is this not a Homeland Security Department issue instead of the Pentagon?

Homeland Security has no personnel, no funding and no authority. At present, Tom Ridge is merely an advisor to the President.

Refer all further questions to Tom Daschle.

With due respect to colleagues on this board, the notion that our armed forces can only serve in Kosovo has outlived its usefulness. It's time to repeal the Posse Commitatus Act. To deal with the Islamist threat, we're going to need every police, security, and military organization in the country plus concerned citizens (preferably armed) and Marvel Comic book heroes.

Nothing in the Constitution prohibits the military from enforcing the law or helping L.E.

Find in the constitution where the federal government is authorized to prosecute crimes other than treason, piracy and counterfeitting.
