Shaheen goes ballistic: Governor takes the money and runs
The Manchester Union Leader ^ | 10/17/02

JEANNE SHAHEEN filled out a questionnaire last November for the anti-nuke Council for a Livable World. In it, she said she opposed a unilateral American withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the former Soviet Union. In Monday night’s debate with opponent John Sununu, she changed her tune, saying she supported President Bush’s withdrawal from the treaty. Too bad for the Council for a Livable World, which has raised $65,000 for Shaheen. The group’s Web site lists her as “a supporter of arms control” and says “She disagrees with President Bush’s mid-December decision to withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.”

Now that she wants the votes of mainstream NH residents, who overwhelmingly support President Bush’s foreign policy, she sings another tune.

Her explanations for the different statements also conflict. She claims that she only opposed a unilateral American withdrawal from the treaty, and because the United States “gave notice of its intent to abrogate the treaty unilaterally and then did so” and “took this step in full consultation with the Russians” it wasn’t really unilateral.

Somebody had better explain this to all the opponents of the United States position on Iraq, because they seem to agree with the dictionary that “unilateral” means “performed or undertaken by only one side.”

In addition to claiming that her position has not changed because the definition of “unilateral” means something different to her than it does to every other speaker of English, she simultaneously has claimed that she changed her mind after the treaty was ended because breaking it “seems to have worked.” Boy, even within her own flip-flop she is flip-flopping.

That Shaheen would take the endorsement and the money of the Council for a Livable World, then change her position on one of the group’s principal areas of interest when it suits her to do so, should give pause to anyone who plans to vote for her because she has stated support for a particular position. Was she telling the truth then, or will she change her stance once she’s elected? There is only one way to find out, but it really isn’t worth the risk.

Bears repeating:

Could you disseminate this information to the 25% of Smith voters who have had the right sides of thier brains snatched?

Shaheen is so highly skilled at saying nothing, doing nothing, appearing to be quite reasonable and moderate while doing so, and characterizing whatever opponent she has as an extremist.

She's tough.

Right side is said to be the creative side, left side the logical side.

These guys are thinking with notochords.

I'm not sure I know any one personally that would support her for any reason, but if I run across any, I'll be sure to pass this stuff along. Other than former Mass people who come to NH for the freedom and try to bring Mass nannystate mentality with them.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for Massachusetts liberals who've crossed the border to avoid paying taxes, but still spout liberal bromides with vigor.

I wrote to Smith and his Chief of Staff. I appealed to his conservatism and patriotism. Haven't heard back but if he doesn't campaign for Sununu, next time I'm asking him to step ouside.

I don't know his COS, Dino somebody or other I think, but he is said to be a rather abrasive and nasty fellow. There was a big shakeup in the office a few months ago with some staffers leaving, including Judy Thayer, a very nice and effective woman, and the ex- of the famous disgraced NH SC Justice Steven Thayer.

"saying nothing, doing nothing, appearing to be quite reasonable and moderate while doing so, and characterizing whatever opponent she has an extremist."

Yeah, I listened to a bit of a debate the other night while I was driving home. I can't recall the particular questions now, but I do remember thinking her response to the question and then her response to Mr. Benson's challenge SOUNDED like she was actually saying something sensible. Then I realized that I was hearing her tone and modulation, (she has good diction, and speaks grammatically) and because I was navigating a left turn against traffic, I wasn't really listening to the words.

On the next question, I realized that she was speaking perfect doublespeak and never actually answered the question, not when it was posed, and not when she was challenged on the content of what she said the first time. Before I got home, I heard her do it two more times. I'd have sat in my driveway and continued to listen, but she was by that time infuriating me, and I couldn't make myself do it.

The sooner that people understand that any and all DemocRATs will lie, cheat and steal to gain power, the better off we will all be.

I think she's killing Sununu.

His ads are weak, he personally is not very visible, and Jeannie's radio ads in particular are vicious.

We'll see.

The Dems have a school for this...and their best candidates graduate with honors. Shaheen is a prize pupil. KKT is a Shaheen wannabe, and failing miserably. She will likely win, but she's a vicious in-fighter in disguise.

It's all an illusion created by her "magic" scarf.....

Umm.. OOOPS. She wasn't debating Mr. Benson for the governor's seat. She was debating Mr. Sununu. My bad!
