Send a Voter to Minnesota: The Democratic Socialists of America posted ad that could increase fraud
Wall St Journal | 10-18-02

Posted on 10/18/2002 5:25:05 AM PDT by SJackson

The Democratic Socialists of America recently posted an ad on their Web site inviting tax-deductible contributions to "bring young people to Minnesota" to vote in the close U.S. Senate race there. The students are invited because liberal incumbent Paul Wellstone, the DSA's top election priority, "will need a high percentage of young people to register and vote for him." The site helpfully notes that "Minnesota is one of the few states that allow same-day voter registration."

Minnesota has long had problems with students who are registered elsewhere voting on Election Day, and the DSA ad sure sounds like an appeal that could encourage more such voter fraud. Minnesota Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer says the ad is "potentially a real problem" and she has referred the issue to the U.S. Attorney. Frank Llewellyn, the DSA's national director, responds that his group doesn't do "illegal things" and calls the criticism "red-baiting."

Hardly. The "Send a Student to Minnesota" plan is bankrolled by the DSA Fund, a tax-deductible group that is prohibited from expressly advocating the election of any candidate. Mr. Llewellyn insists that his group didn't advocate the re-election of Mr. Wellstone, but says the ad has "served its purpose" and has been taken down. Secretary of State Kiffmeyer says the ad is "clearly advocacy."

Political participation is good, but same-day registration and voting has become an invitation to fraud. The temptation is great to bus non-residents into states with close races, have them register, vote and get out of town. Ballot proposals in California and Colorado next month would make their same-day registration systems even more lax.

We hope the U.S. Attorneys got the message this month when John Ashcroft instructed them to show zero tolerance for those who would deny the right to vote or cancel out legitimate votes through fraud.

The purpose must have been to go to jail, since it's apparently against the law.

Oh, the libs are having an indignant hissy fit over this one. Left-wing media watchdog Spinsanity.org huffs that Drudge was "lying" since the group didn't expressly say that the activity was to get non-Minnesotans to register to vote.

As if the meaning wasn't crystal clear.

AFL's John Sweeney is perhaps the most prominent (more so than the handful of US Congressmen) and vocal member

this is a spin on the AFL's student intern program .... an army which hits the streets to perform "voter education" bankrolled directly from the General fund ....reserving the PAC funds for direct contributions

Rent-a-vote, while it might be technically legal, is lowdown and dirty. This needs to be known nation-wide.

she has referred the issue to the U.S. Attorney

Would this be the same US Attorney that owes his/her job to Bill Clinton?

It doesn't matter, since whoever it is would be reporting to and taking orders from the same Janet Ashcroft who sealed all the evidence of voter fraud against the Clintons. Name ONE case of voter fraud from the 2000 elections that has been prosecuted by the so-called Justice Dept since Bubba-2 has taken over the White House.

It's so nice to see this coming out BEFORE an election for a change! We had massive fraud in WI last time, yet our liberal AG refused to investigate. I've often wondered where all these left wing votes come from, since so few people I know will admit to being Dems. It seems now we know - they vote in several states, they entice homeless bums to vote with free smokes, the dead vote... the list goes on and on....

Wellstone repudiated it yesterday. This isn't likely to affect his poll humbers.

When I visited the DSA website on the 16th,
the "Send a Student to Minnesota" pop-up article/ad
mentioned helping students pay tuition and
giving them donated housing. The site has since
pulled the ad. Does anyone have a copy of it?

It all started right here on FR, with this thread (my post).

Then others followed, which is all documented here, including the original text, etc.
