Landrieu says voters don't want puppet in Senate

BATON ROUGE (AP) - Louisiana voters do not want an automatic rubber stamp vote in the Senate for President Bush, Sen. Mary Landrieu said Friday.

With Congress adjourned until after the Nov. 5 elections, the centrist Democrat is back in the state full time to defend her record against a field that includes three major Republican candidates.

For the most part, the Republicans have pressed one issue - that the voters want a Republican to help swing the majority vote in the Senate to the GOP so Bush's programs can sail through.

"The other people say they want to go to Washington because the job is to be a puppet," Landrieu told a cheering crowd of about 500 Democrats in Baton Rouge. "We don't need a puppet. We need a senator."

Landrieu, referring to her support of Bush for a number of his programs, said, "I didn't go to Washington to represent any political party. I went to represent the people."

While "proud to be a Democrat," Landrieu said, "I sometimes have to go in a different direction."

She said she is looking forward to debates with other candidates in the final two weeks before the election, hoping for debate on "real" issues such as education, a balanced energy policy and support for the military.

"We don't need to talk about the design of wallpaper and sidewalks," she said, referring to Republican attack ads painting her new home in Washington as opulent.

Hoping to force Landrieu into a runoff are Congressman John Cooksey of Monroe, Elections Commissioner Suzanne Haik Terrell of New Orleans and state Rep. Tony Perkins of Baton Rouge, all Republicans, and five political unknowns.

Landrieu agrees with the other candidates that the key to the election is the turnout, telling reporters later that if her people go to the polls, she will not face a December runoff.

Landrieu picked up a number of endorsements Friday and one of the most important was that of the Louisiana Sheriffs Association, a help to voter turnout. The more than 12,000 deputy sheriffs are not barred from politicking as are civil service employees.

The association rarely endorses anyone in a statewide election.

Also on board her campaign Friday were a number of officials in the Republican stronghold of Jefferson Parish.

Face the facts: The upcoming election is really about the Supreme Court and Americas survival. The Supreme Court and Lawyers are the controlling factor in American government, make no mistake about it.
The Democrats have shown that they will not allow a Conservative to even be voted on for the Supreme Court. Now I dont care what
one says this is about showing your true colors. By the vote not coming to the floor of the Senate it protects not only Democrats, it keeps Republicans from being exposed by not having to vote.
America cannot survive as a liberal country and still protect itself and our economy. It is impossible.

AS GOES THE U.S. SUPREME COURT,SO GOES AMERICA.IT IS OUR CHOICE AS TO SURVIVING OR NOT AS A SUPER POWER.IF AMERICA WANTS TO BE LIKE MEXICO,CUBA AND CHINA TURN THE LIBERALS LOOSE!

Read and bookmarked. Thanks. I'm still trying to figure out which Rep to vote for. It's between Perkins and Terrell, IMO.

One of the most serious cases of voter fraud occurred when Landrieu was running for senate against Wood Jenkins (R). She was losing significantly in the late hours of the race then a miracle occurred. Her power base, New Orleans, came through and pushed her to victory. Poll watchers accused the votes to have been cast "after" the polls had closed. Dead people had voted! Landrieu won by a very narrow margin 852,945 votes, 50.17% to Jenkins 847,157 votes 49.83%. A good article on this is http://americasfuture.net/1997/apr97/97-0427a.html

Kind of ironic since Mary seems to vote like she's a democrat hand puppet.

Thanks for posting that extremely interesting article. Hopefully with Morial out and Nagen in, New Orleans won't be as big a problem this time.

I am going to take extreme pleasure out of voting against Ms. Landrieu next month.

Thanks for looking- the "child of Moon" fraud was in my pre-web days... I recall listening to many stories on talk radio while I made new lattice panels for our house. There's little doubt in my mind she won via vote fraud, and those spineless republicans were too cowardly to press the matter.
