Boelhert says NO NEW GUN LAWS NEEDED but Conceal and Carry SHOULD NOT BE RELAXED because of Sniper
LWV DEBATE TONIGHT | 10/22/2002 | TLBSHOW

Posted on 10/22/2002 7:16:41 PM PDT by TLBSHOW

Tonight at Suco State College of New York the LWV put on a debate between those running for New York State 24th Congressional district. Republican Congressman Sherwood Boehlert and Conervative David Walrath and demorat 3rd party whatever Mark Dunan

I asked the question, Should Gun Laws be relaxed for Conceal and Carry because of the Sniper attacks? Making it easier for citizens to respond to the threat of the sniper or what ever else we should happen to walk into because of the terrorist threat.

"NO", said Boelhert, Instead he calls for making gun laws we already have much more effective. Does not see the need for new laws. We need to make sure our Police have all the backing they can get against the criminals.

While the conservative candidate and Second Amendment supporter says no new gun laws would stop the sniper and of course supports guns for Americans.

The demorat 3rd party man said he dreams of the day when trigger locks are handed out at all Police Stations. We do not go to war with iraq and Bush is bad and so is the stock market.

When I think of relaxing gun laws, I think of 155mm Howitzers and such. The last time I looked, the highest law in the land says that if you can carry it, it's legal!

Suco... like Sucker or Suckee. What's with these people? Don't they understand that we cannot depend on government to protect us from terrorists who are already here waiting in the bushes to kill us ALL?

They should be passing out M-16's to any law-abiding citizen who asks for one. This would be the quickest way to deal with the wacko. As we've seen, the police have not had sufficient lead time to pin this guy down. If every law-abiding citizen in the beltway had a gun, this guy would go away, either by realizing that everyone is armed, or at the hands of the citizenry shooting his worthless full of holes.

Hate to point it out, but all of the law abiding citizenry in the beltway haven't even been able to give a valid description of the guy yet. What good are guns against an enemy that can't be seen?

We cant see the enemy but he can see the guns.....
If you went in to rob a store and you noticed all the employees were armed...would you still attempt the robbery?

>i>If you went in to rob a store and you noticed all the employees were armed...would you still attempt the robbery?

A different situation. If I wanted to kill the clerk from a hundred yards away, would I care if there were armed customers in side the store with their guns already drawn? They wouldn't see me shoot, know where I was shooting from, or pose any other threat to me. This is why the police and military have snipers; to use against obviously armed people. Remember the shooting with the policeman present?

For your information, the sound of the round being fire is good enough to pin-point the direction of where the shot was fired.

Combat experience in Viet Nam taught me otherwise. Somethng as simple as a brick wall can easily cause the sound to mislead you by 90 degrees. Echos can make a single shot sound like several shots from different locations. Muffled shots from a distance are substantially non directional.

I live in northeast New Mexico. Not too many years ago we had a fella who ran a liquor store before he was elected sheriff and gave it up for political reasons.

We have a fairly strict law about guns in places where liquor is sold or served with the sole exception of LEAs.

So, what did the prospective sheriff do? He hired off duty cops to work the store. All the clerks carried open legally.

Was never held up.

Hummmmmmmm

The guy is shooting people in very open areas.

Meaning the echoing effect is very minimal. Most of the honest witnesses were able to tell which direction the shot came from. So this is a moot point.

Don't understand your point. Clerks carrying guns prevented sniper attacks on liquor stores? How oftern were sniper attacks on liquor stores occuring before the clerks started carrying guns? Remember, we were talking about sniper attacks here. Not liquor store hold ups.

Or what direction they thought the shot came from. No one seems to have seen him yet. As far as I know, we aren't sure exactly where he shot from (maybe I'm wrong about this, but I haven't seen any media pictures of one of his locations yet).

How good is your eye sight. Could you see someone's body features, let alone their face a hundred yards away in a shaded area?

Also, I said the witnesses could tell which direction the shot came from. Which in the first place is what I was commenting about your post 8 of this thread. I did not say that the witnesses saw the shooter.

My eyesight is currently 20/30 (tested last week). A hundred yards is only 300 feet. I shoot paper at 100 yards in low light (dawn/dusk) with open sights and have no problem with seeing the target. At 100 yards, I could see whether it was a man or women, what color and type of clothes were worn, approximate height, and probably make a probable racial identification. I would not be able to give a facial description. I would not be able to identify anything except the number of occupants in a vehicle and an identificatiion of the make model and, probably, year of a vehicle. There is a bus stop a little over a hundred yards from my kitchen window. I just went to it and very easily made similar (actually better)observations. The weather here is dark and overcast today. I understand that most of the shots were less than a hundred yards, so I would expect multiple witnesses to make similar observations if they could pinpoint the source of the shot.

Apparently linear logic escapes you. what moron is going to enter a store to rob it when every single employee is openly carrying a sidearm? By extention, if virtually every citizen in an area is openly carrying a sidearm what thoughts are going to run thru the mind of a lurking shootist?

I used to live in his district. I can assure you that Boelhert is NOT a conservative and NOT a 2nd Amendment supporter.

A person who carries a gun willingly has a better chance of making an effort to find out where the shots came from much more so than the people who are wondering if they are the next victim.

If you were the dog walker at the school carrying concealed when the thirteen year old was shot, would you have tried to identify the killer?

A gun does not make a person into a super hero. It gives a person a chance to defend their life and the lives of others.
