Are they just pulling over cars? That's the impression I got (random Caprice pullovers and so on).

Just heard it had something to do with the vehicle. Choppers and lots of police cars along I 70. They probably abandoned the car on the interstate during chase and went on foot or car was found abandoned.

Thank you for posting this in #3874. I'd planned to go look for a transcript when I finished this thread. From your 3874:

"We understand that you communicated with us by calling several different locations. Our inability to talk has been a concern to us, as it has been for you.

"You have indicated that you want us to do and say certain things. You've asked us to say, quote, We have caught the sniper like a duck in a noose, end quote. We understand that hearing us say this is important to you.

"However, we want you to know how difficult it has been to understand what you want because you have chosen to use only notes, indirect messages and calls to other jurisdictions. The solution remains to call us and get a private toll-free number established just for you.

"We still ask you to call or write us at P.O. Box 7875, Gaithersburg, Md., 20898-7875. If you are reluctant to contact us, be assured that we remain ready to talk, directly with you. Our word is our bond.

"If we can establish communications with you, we can offer other means of addressing what you have asked us for. Let's talk directly. We have an answer for you about your option. We are waiting for you to contact us."

Ok, so it's late and I'm tired and I should have been in bed hours ago. Are we talking about capitulating and paying some kind of ransom here into a numbered brokerage account with untraceable bonds?

Is the duck in the noose an admission that we can't catch him, so we're going to pay him off? Are we saying that if he won't take the untraceable bonds, we can pay the $10M in stock options?

My common sense says that it can't be true, but there's sure a lot of stock market terms there...

All those wondering about the Native American duck/noose/rabbit thingy -- this is the best I could come up with (so far):

The Rabbit Goes Duck Hunting

"The Rabbit was so boastful that he would claim to do what- ever he saw anyone else do, and so tricky that he could usually make the other animals believe it all. Once he pretended that he could swim in the water and eat fish just as the Otter did, and when the others told him to prove it he fixed up a plan so that the Otter himself was deceived. Soon afterward they met again and the Otter said, "I eat ducks sometimes." Said the Rabbit, "Well, I eat ducks too." The Otter challenged him to try it; so they went up along the river until they saw several ducks in the water and managed to get near without being seen. The Rabbit told the Otter to go first. The Otter never hesitated, but dived from the bank and swam under water until he reached the ducks, when he pulled one down without being noticed by the others, and came back in the same way.

While the Otter had been under the water the Rabbit had peeled some bark from a sapling and made himself a noose. "Now," he said, "Just watch me;" and he dived in and swam a little way under the water until he was nearly choking and had to come up to the top to breathe. He went under again and came up again a little nearer to the ducks. He took another breath and dived under, and this time he came up among the ducks and threw the noose over the head of one and caught it. The duck struggled hard and finally spread its wings and flew up from the water with the Rabbit hanging on to the noose.

It flew on and on until at last the Rabbit could not hold on any longer, but had to let go and drop. As it happened, he fell into a tall, hollow sycamore stump without any hole at the bottom to get out from and there he stayed until he was so hungry that he had to eat his own fur, as the rabbit does ever since when he is starving. After several days, when he was very weak with hunger, he heard children playing outside around the trees. He began to sing:

Cut a door and look at me;
I'm the prettiest thing you ever did see.

The children ran home and told their father, who came and began to cut a hole in the tree. As he chopped away the Rabbit inside kept singing, "Cut it larger, so you can see me better; I"m so pretty." They made the hole larger, and then the Rabbit told them to stand back so that they could take a good look as he came out. They stood away back, and the Rabbit watched his chance and jumped out and got and got away."

IMHO, the money's a red herring. It can ALWAYS be traced. Always. Anybody with the cajones and skill to do what these folks have done would surely know that. I see it as yet another case of the perps playing to the profilers (or perhaps other LE misinformation/code that we don't know about).

Heard on MSNBC that a sniper magazine at the liquor store which was robbed (Alabama) had a fingerprint.

They also said that the police connected the two by a tip. I thought it has been reported that the connection was made through the credit card (stolen at the robbery, and sniper asked money to be put into that cc account).

I gotta chime in with something that just occurred to me. Here we have 13 people who have been shot, 10 of them have died, in and around the D.C. area. Yes, it is horrific, no community should be terrorized by anyone. And this leads to my point

I wonder how many shooting deaths there were in South Philly over the same time period? Lets broaden that a little and include Detroit and maybe throw in one more area so that it roughly equals about 4-5 million people. How many murders have occurred in the same general population throughout other communities across the nation since the sniper began his rampage?

I'm not a statistition, but I have a hunch that the numbers would be close to the same as the now infamous sniper. What makes this one so special? Hundreds, if not thousands of people are being killed, mamed and wounded all across the country every week and it barely gets noticed. Many of them will be lucky to get a note buried somewhere in the back pages of the news paper. WHY?

Is it because these people are not considered innocent? Are the victims of the sniper more or less deserving of the kind of attention this case is getting? Even more, is the sniper more deserving of the attention he is getting than all the other murderers who are "quietly" killing people throughout this nation each and every day? I cannot help but wonder why this is?

I may be wrong about this but I heard that the United States is the murder capital of the world. What makes this one so special?

I feel like I am being manipulated by something that is beyond my control. I'm getting off of this roller coaster. I have a life to live.

When you're a news junkie, this IS your life. ;-) (sad, ain't it?)

And yeah, you're right. The stats show it. You have something like a 1/300 chance of being killed by someone OTHER THAN THE SNIPER in the DC area; you have a 1/517,000 (and that's being very...liberal...in the nice sense of the word :p) of being hit by the sniper. Why is this guy capturing our attention? Because he's good at psyching us out. Your average murder, the American understands. The cruel, strange, weird serial murders...we can't grasp them, and so we keep trying to. It makes no sense to us, and the mind recoils. We can at least understand the motives behind a guy who "goes postal" at work, or robs a bank, or knocks over a drugstore for Oxycontin...but this is pure, quantified *EVIL* of a nature we rarely encounter.

And that's why we're fascinated with it -- and it doesn't bother me much, because Americans should be constantly reminded that Evil *does exist", and not just as an abstract concept.
