Get a copy of BG Burkett's book Stolen Valor. He lists numerous resources for investigating military service.

As I recently found out (have been trying to trace a friend, a National Guardsman), the website that formerly used to trace servicemen is now accessible only to designed .mil suffix web addresses -- no more public access, for security reasons.
