Sniper Suspect Shown in Campaign Ad

By DAVID ESPO
AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) -- John Allen Muhammad, accused in the sniper killings, has made his political debut. His image is appearing in a gun control commercial that an underdog Democrat hopes to ride to victory in New Jersey.

"Scott Garrett shouldn't be blamed for the sniper," says a commercial that Anne Sumers' campaign has begun airing in a district in the northern part of the state. "But Garrett's positions are the problem."

The Garrett campaign sharply criticized the ad.

"I think it's sickening to see Anne Sumers exploiting the tragedy of the sniper shootings in a cheap attempt to get votes and avoid the real issues," said Evan Kozlow, a spokesman for the GOP contender.

Jeff Garcia, a spokesman for Sumers, defended the ad as an attempt to use a recent event to bring the important issue of gun control to the voters.

The commercial opens with a newspaper photo of Muhammad, who faces charges in the shooting deaths that terrorized the Washington, D.C., area this month. That fades to the image of a barrel of a gun on one side of the screen and a picture of Garrett on the other.

The ad says Garrett voted in the Legislature to repeal a ban on assault weapons and to weaken laws covering concealed weapons.

Garrett and Sumers are contesting an open House seat that retiring GOP Rep. Marge Roukema has long held. Republican strategists say that Garrett is on his way to victory. Democrats concede Sumers will need a late surge to win.

-----

House Republicans, hoping to exploit their advantage in campaign cash, are moving into selected congressional districts with a late run of television advertising.

Two of the commercials are straightforward appeals for support for President Bush's agenda, in strongly Republican Utah and Kansas. Another criticizes a Democratic candidate as a tax-and-spend legislator in California. The final one goes after a Tennessee Democrat for taking campaign donations from liberals in Washington.

Democrats have long been rated the favorites in those races, including Lincoln Davis, running against Janice Bowling in Tennessee; Dennis Cardoza against Keith Monteith in California and Reps. Jim Matheson, challenged by John Swallow in Utah, and Dennis Moore, battling Adam Taff in Kansas.

The advertising marks the first GOP television foray into the races, a sign that GOP strategists consider them longshot opportunities at best.

Democrats, too, are on the air in a new district for the first time in the campaign's closing days.

In their case, it's a suburban Pennsylvania seat, where the party is running a commercial designed to boost Dan Wofford's chances in a race that has long trended toward Republican Jim Gerlach.

The ad says Gerlach voted in the Legislature against funding for a prescription drug program for the elderly.

-----

With the memory of Florida's 2000 presidential election still fresh, both political parties will have plenty of legal talent to call on next Tuesday for any controversy that arises.

"Florida made everyone realize that you simply have to be on the ground ... solving voter problems where they occur," said Jack Young, an attorney for the Democratic National Committee. "It doesn't do any good to solve them later."

Thus, he said, Democrats will have experienced lawyers and election administrators around the country to intervene if problems are reported and "where appropriate, contact law enforcement."

Terry McAuliffe, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, said recently the party would have "thousands of lawyers on the ground, so that no one is intimidated into forgoing their rights."

Republicans will be well-lawyered, too, although they aren't emphasizing the point as heavily as the Democrats.

Alex Vogel, attorney for the GOP senatorial campaign committee, said Republicans will "make sure there are lawyers in Washington who are manning the phones all day," in contact with attorneys and others in the states.

But Marc Racicot, chairman of the GOP, said, "We have not dispatched legions of lawyers because we're suspecting that something is wrong. We're going to be prepared as we always have been, but I think it's a fairly predictable and routine part of what we do."

Yes it is sickening .. but after the pep rally the Dems had at Wellstone's funeral ... I am NOT surprised

It seems the Dems like to benefit from the deaths of people to promote their Party

Every time I think the Rats couldn't sink any lower .. THEY DO

EMILY'S LIST RECOMMENDS ANNE SUMERS FOR U.S. HOUSE

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – EMILY's List, the largest financial resource for women running for Congress and governor, today announced its support of physician and small businesswoman Anne Sumers in her U.S. House of Representatives race in New Jersey’s 5th district.

“Anne Sumers has a long record of public service and accomplishment and will work for issues that New Jersey cares about, including quality education for children and improving gun safety,” said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY’s List. “Anne Sumers’ experience as a doctor gives her first hand knowledge of the importance of quality health care for New Jersey families.”

The retirement of Republican Rep. Marge Roukema has created a promising opportunity for a Democrat to win in this open seat. This district is socially moderate and fiscally conservative, beliefs that are in line with Sumers and in stark contrast to the conservative Republican candidate.

“With the support of EMILY’s List, I look forward to being a strong advocate in Congress for affordable healthcare and quality schools for the children and families of the 5th district,” said Sumers. “I am delighted to have the recognition and support of EMILY’s List.”

EMILY’s List operates as a donor network, recommending pro-choice Democratic women candidates to its members, who contribute directly to the candidates they choose. In the 1999-2000 election cycle, EMILY’s List members contributed $9.3 million to pro-choice Democratic women candidates. In its 17-year history, EMILY’s List has helped to elect four women governors, eleven women to the United States Senate and 53 women to the U.S. House of Representatives.

As a physician, Dr. Sumers believes in order to provide patients with quality care, Medicare reimbursements must be raised back to their original rates that have been rolled back in the past several years. Dr. Sumers also strongly believes that physicians must be provided with reasonable malpractice insurance rates in order to provide needed service.

As a physician and a woman, Dr. Sumers realizes how important it is for women to have a choice in reproductive rights. Dr. Sumers is a strong pro-choice advocate.

Dr. Sumers is a strong advocate for open space preservation and environmental integrity. In Northern New Jersey where open space in sparse, Sumers has long been involved in open space preservation at the local level.

As a doctor Anne has seen the dangers of gun violence first hand in the emergency room. She is a gun safety advocate who cares greatly about safe communities for our children. As a mother, Anne believes that smart gun safety will protect our children from dangerous accidents. Anne Sumers was one of the first members of Million Mom March.

The democRATS have become the party of DEATH. Pretty soon their candidates will start passing out Tarot DEATH cards at their campaign rallies (or memorial services).

About the only lives that liberals fight for these days are death-row inmates seeking clemency.

As a doctor Anne has seen the dangers of gun violence first hand in the emergency room. But she endorses serial killing in abortuaries. Yup, that's a typical democrat. Astonishing duplicity! I wonder if all of her 'girlfriends' also believe in a woman's right to choose a serial killer for social adjustment? This woman would do better to seek scissor control instead of gun control ... more infant children are killed by scissors to the brain than assault rifles ... but this socialist sow thinks killing the unborn is enlightened but owning the means to defend house and family is outrageous. I will trust my .45 to keep me out of her ER.

You know what the correct response to this ad is,don't you? The Republican should appear on a tv ad that asks if the DNC has given his opponet enough money to post bail so the sniper could make personal appearances on the campaign trail with her. He should then run a ad that says sometthing like "9 out of 10 mass murderers prefer the Dim Party".
