I thought Mondale saying he was for "low interest rates" was also revealing, in that a senator doesn't have the power to directly impact the rates. Also, he presided over 20% interest rates as Veep way back when.

True. Coleman was hampered by the soccer moms. You could see he was itching to use it. He was apparently allocated only one death blow...which he more or less took at the end.
