`Islam Awareness Week' launched in UK

London, Nov 5, IRNA -- It is particularly important that Britain celebrates the contributions made by the Muslim community to the stability and prosperity of society as a whole, Home Office Minister Lord Filkin said at the launch of `Islam Awareness Week' in the UK. "Islamic Awareness Week offers us an opportunity to reflect on the benefits that Islam and British Muslims bring to British life," Filkin said at the launch in parliament on Monday.

He said that every day across the nation, Muslims are playing a "vital role in building strong and vibrant communities." British Muslims, he added, bring with them a "strong and inspiring history of academic, scientific and cultural achievements."

In a message of support to the launch, Prime Minister Tony Blair said the importance of the week had "never been greater" following the events of September 11, 2001 which had "made it more vital than ever that ignorance about this great faith is tackled."

"Your contribution to the richness of British society often goes unrecognized. Worse than that, you and your communities have been time and again victims of prejudice and abuse," Blair said. Awareness week, organized by the Islamic Society of Britain for the eighth successive year, was launched with the publication of a survey of British attitudes towards Islam that found 84 percent believed Muslims and other faiths can live peacefully together.

The secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Iqbal Sacranie, who attended the launch, said he was "heartened" by the findings.

"Interestingly, the younger respondents were more positive, holding out a message of hope for community relations in our country," he said.

The coordinator of Islam Awareness Week, Sher Khan, said that the survey also showed the "solid measure" of the challenge ahead of the information gap that had to be filled with 64 percent of respondents admitting that they did not know very much about British Muslims.

The week, which this year coincides with the start of Ramadan, is aimed to improve understanding of Islam and promote better relations between Britain's three million Muslims and the rest of the community.

Due to the timing of the week, the Islamic Society of Britain said it was inviting the British public to join Muslims in fasting this Thursday so that they could share the experience as an act of remembrance, as a spiritual exercise, and a time for charity.
