ENOUGH SCHADENFREUDE!
Me | 11/6/2002

Posted on 11/06/2002 12:16:28 PM PST by ArcLight

I've detected way too much gloating up in here. It makes me uncomfortable and I wonder if it bothers anybody else.

I thank God the GOP did as well as it did, but I harbor no hatred for the opposition. For one thing, well, I just don't. I find it hard to hate somebody just because he'd pull a different lever in a voting booth. For another, if we did that, we'd be just like the worst, creepiest people we've seen in the Democrat party--the ones that held the Wellstone funerally or who passed out Oreo cookies to attack a black Republican in Maryland.

I can't stand that kind of hateful attack-dog stuff, and I want no part of it. The gloating I see here reminds me of it, and I hope that people will dial it back a bit, now that the first flush of victory has passed.

Or is it just me?

Relax, it's just the "first flush of victory." People will calm down soon and get to the business of rolling back decades of government corruption. I think.

But that's exactly the point of Schadenfreude--'strange joy'--these events happen and we feel some kind of joy about them even when that joy might be inappropriate.

There's too much gloating going on, I would agree, but when bad things happen to bad people, why should we not expect some sense of satisfaction about it?

Two Republicans are in front of a firing squad. They are asked if they have any final requests. One Republican says to the other, "I'd kinda like a blindfold."

The second Republican replies, "Let's not raise trouble."

Well, I for one want to raise a little trouble for a change!

There was a time when I viewed the "good" RATS as merely the "loyal opposition". It is the RATs themselves who have convinced me that they are, in fact, the enemy - to be defeated everywhere. The change occurred gradually, but it was complete when I realized that the RAT party was no longer interested in the continuity of the Constitutional Republic. To be sure, the repubos are not perfect in their defense of that venerable document, but they are not in as big a hurry to destroy it.

Humans compete. Some lose. Some win. Those that win can be happy that they did.

If it makes you feel any better, we are all going to die.

Since the RATS feel so bad, maybe we should just give back the races we won. Or at least enough of them to make it even. Then everyone can feel good and we can all just get along.

I think 'gloating' means doing it in front of the opposition. I would never do that. If we keep it in here at FR, where only Dem disruptors would see it, then they're basically crashing our celebration.

That said, I'm pretty low-key either way. My joy is inside. A good wedding present for me -- my small ceremony is this Saturday. Would you like a CD with video of the ceremony? It might take a week or two for me to create them.

Name one government program you think the Republicans will cut. I know your post mentioned corruption, but do you think the party of "less government intrusion" will actually implement its beliefs? Unfortunately, I don't anymore. I would like them to throw me a bone. I don't expect the New Deal and Great Society to be gone with the stroke of a pen, but I'd like to see Bush cut SOMETHING damnit.

I'm guilty of gloating and it's bad, because life teaches you that what goes around comes around. Remember when Nixon went through Watergate and *Republican* was a dirty name? Remember Jimmy Carter and his idiot family for four years? Remember Iran-Contra and how Reagan was nearly pulled down? Remember the electorate twice voting in Clinton and New Yorkers voting in his wife as Senator? There's a lot to remember and it could/will be our turn next.

I get your point, but I work in a Hollywood studio, where I am literally surrounded by liberals. I like my colleagues, but they have no compunction about hammering President Bush as an idiot, an appointed president, and so forth, as well as blithely insulting conservatives in general as fiends in human shape. This morning I cheerfully called out as I entered the office, "the reign of terror starts today". We all had a good laugh and went about our business.

I find it hard to hate somebody just because he'd pull a different lever in a voting booth.

When their lever-pulling results in policies that are destructive to me and my family, such as confiscatory taxes, infringments on my personal liberties, corruption, and general all-around Marxism, I find it incredibly easy to hate them. Their politics are based on envy and theft and I despise them.

I usually notice that type of behavior from people who weren't part of the process of getting the work done. The workers for the campaigns are just tried and relieved.

The workers can easily see it could have gone the other way.

Senator Cornyn said it best. Now the real work begins.

After all the Democrats have put us through, I think we're entitled to feel good about this. The message is that the country is rejecting them and embracing President Bush - that makes me happy. I won't apologize for it.

Maybe you're talking about something else, and I just haven't seen the posts that are causing you to cringe.

When I heard the new "junior" senator from New Jersey take one final [insert slang for urination here] on Forrester in his breathtakingly classless acceptance speech, any reluctance I felt to gloat was whisked away. To hell with 'em.

I harbor no hatred for the opposition.

Well, the 'opposition' wants to take your money, property and freedom, and redistribute it to THEIR voters.

They want to negage achievement, punish success and dumb down the country, so that they might easier gain and hold power.

Bottom Line: I do hate them, and I dont mind saying so.

They are my constant enemy, because I know that they are out there plotting to take away more and more of my constitution rights for their own self-enrichment.

I intend to laugh it up as much as I can, because tommorow the fight begins again.

Sorry but schadenfreude is not the same thing as celebrating a hard won victory. After the what the RATS did in 2000, and the corrupt scams since then, from Jeffords to the NJ switch scheme, to the crass Wellstone memorial, we have the right to gloat a bit. There is comparison to what the Dems did at the Wellstone memorial. We won fair and square, despite the fraud and deceit of the RATS.

And I don't think the hatred is aimed so much at Democrat voters as at the corrupt and crooked leaders of that party.

A couple of weeks ago I tried to exit the highway and a guy wouldn't let me into his lane (I had time and had signaled) and then he yelled at me to F-off and gave me the finger. I couldn't figure out what I had done to him and my husband later said he thought it was my Talent bumpersticker. (The buy was in a modified with ladders, perhaps a union worker.)

There could have been a wreck and this guy's road rage at me could have gotten people killed. Talk about hatred! All for a lousy bumpersticker?

America seems like two different countries sometimes and I think that their hate-filled practices have fed the division.

I divide lefties into two groups: those who know where they are leading us and those who just hate the rich. I despise both kinds with a burning passion. I hate with all my heart those who will abolish our Bill of Rights the first chance they get and hand us over on a platter to the Socialists who run the UN, who will loot us and divvy up the kitty between them, and then begin dragging all of humanity into the abyss. Even now I am actually restraining myself so as not to say how I REALLY feel.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to gloat some more and plot the next round of attacks in 2004. May our enemies be vanquished, may they gnash their teeth and pull their hair, may we hear the weeping and wailing of their women, etc etc etc.

I agree... let's knock off the gloating...the results could be tragic

Proverbs 24
17 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice,
18 or the LORD will see and disapprove and turn His wrath away from him.

We wouldn't want God's wrath to be removed from the Demon-crats, would we? I have long suspected that God allowed Clinton's impeachment to fail for this very reason. So, let's not blow it again.

Stop gloating! Leave God's wrath where it belongs -- on them, not us!

Enjoying your own victory is not schadenfreud. But it can get to be gloating.

We're entitled to celebrate the election for a day. After Bush won in 2000, Gore and his friends didn't even let us celebrate.

But I agree with you as far as the behavior of public figures and Republican politicians goes. They should avoid gloating and over the longer term avoid triumphalism, or they will pay a big price. They should avoid taking their victory for granted, or they will kick the opportunity away.

I haven't heard any of them gloating. Nothing like the way the clintonoids always behave when they win. Anyone remember Bill Clinton's first inaugural celebration, and the way the media treated it?

I don't think President Bush will be inviting Hollywood starlets in to jump in the Lincoln bed.

As the originator of the Schadenfreude Thread here on FR, I'd like to point out that Schadenfreude is an expression of joy, not hatred. In other words, it's perfectly okay to celebrate the misfortune of the enemy's cause, so long as that celebration does not involve hatred towards the enemy as a person.

For the record: I don't hate anybody, liberal or conservative. But I do hate the various causes that liberals stand for: communism, socialism, liberalism, humanism, hedonism, atheism, etc. I will continue to express the "strange joy" I feel at seeing these diabolical causes destroyed.
