BERLIN, Germany -- European officials have expressed concern the U.S. president will now be more emboldened, especially on Iraq, following his Republican party's mid-term election gains.

Europe and Bush have been at loggerheads over whether the threat of military action should be included in a new U.N. draft resolution on Iraq, and European leaders have also voiced concern about U.S. calls for "regime change" in Iraq.

Russians are hoping Republicans' control of the Senate will provide it with more friends in its campaign World Trade Organisation membership.

It has to be said that in large parts of Europe they simply do not get George Bush.

It has to be said that in large parts of Europe they think of Bush only in terms of the stereotypes promulgated by those who deliberately misrepresent him as stupid, reckless, and shortsighted. That is Europe's problem, not Bush's.

The Euro wennies have good reason to fear a bolder Bush. They can take care of Bosnia/Kosovo themselves, without US troops and $US. They can also resolve their financial troubles with their own belt tightening - no more siphoning $US through the UN. And, the Germans and French will find their illegal oil purchases from Iraq cut off soon. There will be no participation in the rebuilding of Iraq by France, Germany and maybe Turkey - paid for by Iraqui oil

Why do we need to convince the germans? Heck, the whole UN Iraq debate is just for show anyways. The outcome was already predetermined by Bush when he gave his speech to the UN.

There is a big gap in understanding. The Euros dismiss Bush as a "cowboy". What they don't realize is that that is a compliment to an American. It's kind of like President Kennedy and his "Ich bin ein Berliner" comment, He didn't understand what that would sound like (sweet pastry) to a citizen of Berlin. "Cowboy" is no insult, and the Euros don't even realize that. Euros don't "get" a lot of things and the gap is widening.

The American media whores are partly responsible for this. Most European newspapers and news organizations have reporters over here in Washington or New York, and these reporters read the American press, watch American TV, and hang out with American correspondents. Since the vast majority of American reporters are leftists, their European counterparts seldom have much access to what real Americans are thinking and talking about. It's an elite club of left-wing snobs, all busy patting themselves on the back for their vast intelligence and marvelous idealism.

I'm British, not a European. So far as I am concerned, if the Germans hate it, it's good for us.

Schroeder probably did a bundle in his lederhosen when he found out President Bush had won so handsomely.

I am unusual in the amount of interest in American politics I take - so far as I am concerned the Democrats should be ruthlessly persecuted (note to DU lurkers: Boo!) - when you find Tony Blair is a more reliable ally of America than Tom Daschle, something is not quite right with the Democrats.

CNN was the same organisation that got me started on alt.impeach.clinton and subsequently Free Republic. They were making it seem like everyone outside America was in favour of Clinton. My participation on alt.impeach.clinton was an angry rebuttal to that.

Who can say, if CNN continues, maybe they'll irritate the wrong person some day. They are irritating, certainly.
