Dear Mr. Moderator...

A vanity to be sure. I've been here for over three years and have never abused my posting priv's. IMHO, this is worthy of remaining up here and being discussed.

Thanks,

J6P

Great post, Joe! One question: does your approach amke possible the renovation of FBI and INS without a new department like this 'Homeland Defense'? If that is possible, I'm all for your approach. [I want our borders patrolled by military, with loaded weapons and sophisticated detection devices. I would volunteer to stand as a guard at the detention centers, BTW, and that is somethign this 'new' department doesn't seem to consider, the use of volunteer citizens.

While I support G.W. in his efforts to enhance homeland security, I fear passing those powers to president hillary/kerry/daschle, etc. in 2008. Instead of additional programs, I believe the intent can be achieved by compelling congress (they DO work for us, right?) to consider, and act on the following...

Can't see the Dems winning in 2008 with that lightweight line-up.
Wait for us Canucks to get on the RIGHT track, too
Sooner or later Canada will wake up.

We are electing people that act as if they have no idea about the Constitution or laws already on the books. These politicans did go to college right?

IMHO we should have declared war against militant Islam.

On 9/12/2001 we should have declared war.

On 9/13/2001, one-megaton nuclear devices should have detonated over the capitals of all terror-supporting nations, no exceptions.

On 9/14/2001 the President should have revoked the visas of all foreign nationals of terror-supporting states.

On 9/15/2001 mass deportations of illegal aliens should have started.

On 9/16/2001 the borders should have been sealed using National Guard troops.

None of these things have happened.

Therefore, we will have new terrorist attacks on our soil, which are worse than the initial 9/11 attack.

Good points.

One problem is that we're a Westphalian nation-state trying to declare war on a post-Westphalian transnational entity.

More controversial, what about letters of marque, privateers, and posses of sworn and deputized citizens?

We are offering $25,000,000 if any Arab or foreign Muslim hands over bin Ladin. Why shouldn't such offers be extended to American citizens?

Liberals are terrified by the idea of arming citizens and letting them loose to defend themselves and would scream their heads off if anyone proposed it. "Vigilantes!" No doubt there would be regretable incidents, as there were in the past. But the police and the army almost always arrive on the scene too late to save the victims, and there are inevitably regretable incidents involving police and military, too.

During the second world war, citizens were deputized as air-raid wardens and coastal watchers. Properly deputized citizens, or even privateers, could be used--regulated and controlled--as they always were in the past.

This sort of approach may not be necessary unless substantial numbers of freelance terrorists start operating within the country. But things may well come to that, given the huge numbers of illegal aliens, the mosques scattered all over the country teaching hatred from Saudi textbooks, and the affiliations between Muslim aliens and American black muslims and prison inmates. We should have a plan to deal with such scenarios realistically if they arise. Americans have always been relied on to rally around and help themselves in emergencies.
