Eminem’s Real Detroit
National Review Online ^ | 11/18/02 | Henry Payne

DETRIOT — For 14 months, since 9/11/01, American politicians and news media have bird-dogged the alleged injustice of U.S. government policy towards Arab minorities. But now along comes an unlikely source, the hit movie 8 Mile, to remind us of the real government injustice in America: 30 years of urban policy that have crippled a generation of American youth.

Behind the star power of the popular, foul-mouthed Eminem and a classic script about a young man trying to escape the ghetto, 8 Mile topped the box office at $54 million in its first weekend. But the movie is more than a star vehicle — it is a brave, un-PC, and brutally honest portrayal of America's most infamous urban nightmare, Detroit.

Have the Democrats abandoned the inner-cities?

What people fail to understand is that Detroit is an example of a liberal success story.

47% illiteracy, rampant poverty, welfare dependency, 70% illegitimacy = DEMOCRAT voters.

They don't even have to bother to campaign in the city, their 90%+ share of the vote is guaranteed.

Absolutely not. Nor will they.

However, their day is coming.

"But when Warren Avenue crosses Central Avenue, the vista dramatically changes. Central marks the border of East Dearborn, the beginning of Detroit, and the end of hope. Like someone has flipped a switch, the streets are suddenly lifeless. Storefront after storefront stands empty or boarded up. Graffiti defaces walls, and grass pokes through cracked, neglected sidewalks. The few faces that populate these desolate streets are mostly African American."

The change is even more stark on the NE side, where Jefferson takes you past mile upon mile of utter despair - into the Grosse Pointes. Talk about flipping a switch. It's such a stunning change as to be akin to a special effect in a movie.

Even if you've never been to Detroit, you can get a pretty good handle on what it's like. Just rent "Escape From New York." The inner city is the closest thing to a gulag you'll ever encounter in the US.

Superb, insightful article!

This article shows just what is completely wrong with the Democratic Party. It is not surprising that many people have said Detroit inside the 8 Mile border reminds them of Soviet cities before 1989--dreary, little services, buildings crumbling, and so on. The fact even the nearby Arab-American-dominated suburb of Dearborn is doing well speaks many volumes on what is wrong with Detroit.

If the Democrats were smart they would completely turn the entire city inside the 8 Mile border into one gigantic Enterprise Zone with major economic incentives to rebuild downtown Detroit in almost every aspect. It was this far-sightedness by Rudy Giuliani in the 1990's that literally transformed Harlem and even the Bedford-Sylvestant areas (areas notorious for their decay and high crime rates) of New York City into surprisingly pleasant areas lately.

What a racist description! First of all what is "illiteracy"? Maybe they are not good at reading and writing the white man's language but they are 100% literate in their own oral traditions! The failure of Euro Centric and white male owned businesses to recognize these non white male ways of communication is an example of institutional racism! And there are no "illegitimate" children. That is another white man's word to describe the patriarchal and oppressive "family" system of White Male domination. These "welfare dependent" people raise their children collectively as they do in non white third world countries. They are free of the patriarchal attitudes that are a major oppressive factor in this country!

Of course I don't believe a word of the above- but that is something one would seriously hear from a college "professor" these days.

Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) will no doubt be contacting you soon with an offer of tenured professorship...

And in the late 1990s, state Republicans succeeded in approving charter schools — finally providing Detroit parents with an alternative to the decaying public system. Today, with long waiting lists to get into existing charters, Republicans are proposing to raise the cap on the number of charters allowed.

At every turn, these reforms were met by fierce resistance from state and city Democrats and their entrenched union allies.

They are still crying about the "theft" of the Detroit school district. The state took over the administration of the district due to terminal incompetence (at best) and venal corruption (at worst). Of course, this was a racist move by John Engler, designed to keep the city down. Somehow. I don't know. It's just racist, racist!

That technique was perfected by the late mayor Coleman Young, who could not find a corrupt scheme he wouldn't get involved in.

The commentary is something you'd read coming from the School of Urban Studies, to wit...

By the year 2000 the Northland Center area was in severe decline as other shopping centers in further out suburbs copied its successful model and undercut its customer base.

Nooo, it was the roving gangs of thuggish Detroit youths, roaming the Northland Center's parking lots and thoroughfares, and preying upon honest shoppers which led to Northland's decline...

Eight Mile is stark evidence of the failure of liberal urban policy.

Urban policy, yes. But as you wisely point out...

(Democrats) don't even have to bother to campaign in the city, their 90%+ share of the vote is guaranteed.

True, and they are soo-o-o successful, they somehow get 'everybody' to vote, whether dead or alive! Without the crooked Detroit mahcine, Michigan would be an overwhelmingly Republican state.

I used to live just north of the "Eight Mile Frontier", and I can attest this article tells the truth. If anything, they understate the horrible condition of a once beautiful city, destroyed by racist (black, not white) policies, unchecked crime (organized and unorganized), drugs, crooked unionism, and decades of Liberal triumphalism in politics.

Detroit is America's future, should Liberalism triumph! It's simply a ghastly place to go except for an occasional furtive visit to Greektown or the Symphony. Even then, watch closely over your shoulder and expect your car to get robbed!

Good article- almost makes me want to go see Eminem's movie, which I was going to skip.

Anyone with half a brain can see that government policies toward cities like Detroit are the main cause of its blight. (The shame is that it's unlikely to get any better under Granholm)

At the same time, who is it that creates/allows these failed government policies? Leadership. Leadership that is either too stupid, too evil, too compromised or too fearful to demand and implement the kind of government policies that encourage productivity, literacy, safety and prosperity.

When leaders fail whose job is it to step up to the plate? Surely somebody has to.
