I just got back from a drive down main street and noticed that the city workers have been busy today. The Nativity scene is going up right where it is suposed to be.
Proudly displayed on the lawn of the County Court House!

Singer's Men's Store in my town was the first one to put up Christmas decorations every year and also the first one to demand that the schools not have any Christmas decorations.
I was 10 years old at the time, but I could see the hypocrisy.

Europe although very secular is very respectful of Christmas. Europe, although very secular is very respectful of CHRISTIANITY. Most of Europe is Christian. Look at Ireland and Italy (predominantly Catholic) Britian, Germany, Austria (Protestantism and Catholicism prevail) The Greeks are Orthodox. I'm surprised at your surprise.

Thank you fro the new information on Sparkle Season. The new slogan -- Downtown Pittsburgh, A Holiday Tradition With a New Twist --- doesn't really ring my chimes, or in this case, bells.

Certainly one thing Pat Buchanan is on the money about is the serious nature of the cultural wars that rage daily between the amoral, anything goes-left and us folk who believe character counts.

We kept asking (where other people could hear us) what holiday the seller had in mind. Flag Day, perhaps? National Boss's Day? Maybe Groundhog Day? I do this ALL the time when I am out during this time of year. Drives my wife nuts, but I really don't care. I confront people...ask them where the tradition of exchanging gifts for this 'holiday' come from? Why are they ASHAMED of Christmas? I believe Jesus had something to say about those who were afraid to confess Him to others. There is nothing like pinging someone's 'comfort zone' this time of year.

You certainly don't expect the retail world to pick up and advertise the true meaning of Christmas, do you? I expect them to respect the beliefs of the majority of their customers.

I think you are right, but why are western Christian so willing to let their religion be so marginalized in the marketplace of ideas and in the real marketplace too??Maybe if you read Luke 6:20-26 you'll see what Christ had to say about those who were marginalized for His sake....

I'd be happy to shop at stores that don't take advantage of a religious holiday to make a profit. But they are taking advantage of a religious holiday to make a profit....and in the process...gutting the holiday of all its meaning and not respecting the religous aspects of this one particular holiday, while paying attention to other religion's holidays.

The new slogan -- Downtown Pittsburgh, A Holiday Tradition With a New Twist --- doesn't really ring my chimes, or in this case, bells.No. But the Politically Correct "Sparkle Season" has always nauseated me.
I consider it a victory that it is officially kaput.

Don't let them take the Christ, out of Christmas. Say that reminds me...
A couple of years ago I found out right here on Free Republic that I was Jew. Yup! I made a post (I think it was on a Chanukah thread), wherein I typed "xmas". Somebody got worked up, and posted their own vanity thread about the "Christ killing Jews taking the Christ out of Christmas". My post was offered as Exhibit A proof of this Zionist plot.
But there's more to the story...
That very morning, before the [short-lived] thread appeared, a Jewish Freeper had made a comment to me, that the Lord has a way of revealing what tribe a person is from.
Oy vey. :-O

Considering that Christmas has its roots in pagan Winter Solstice celebrations, which our current "commercialized" Christmas reflects, Christmas sans such celebration seems to be the true Christian way, and a new date might be a good idea. There certainly is no Biblical justification for December 25th, and the only reason it is the 25th is because of the pagan tradition. The very date is tainted by paganism.

A guy I work with told me today that he finished the worst part of Christmas..he mailed out all his "G*d d*mn Christmas cards". His exact words.
How's that for the Christmas Spirit?
