L.A. now leads U.S. in murders (Gun control doesn’t work!)

An outbreak of gang violence has turned Los Angeles into the nation's murder capital and prompted LAPD officials to launch an all-out war Wednesday against street violence.

Police Chief William Bratton ordered dozens of officers, backed by state and federal authorities, to hit the city's toughest streets after a war between rival gangs in South Central claimed eight lives in the last two weeks.

With police supporters chanting "Stop the killing" outside the 77th Division headquarters, Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell vowed at a news conference to end the bloody rampage.

"The message to all communities in Los Angeles is that this department remains dedicated to public safety in reducing the fear and incidents of crime," McDonnell said.

"In Los Angeles over the past two years we've experienced a rise in crime. While we can take some comfort that citywide as a whole the increase to date has not been as high it was, nonetheless it is not acceptable."

McDonnell, newly promoted from commander to be Bratton's right-hand man, was flanked by members of the Central Recovery and Development Project. They called for tough police action in an area that has been hit by the city's worst violence in years.

City-----Homocides------Population-----Per 100,000

KILLINGS IN THE U.S.
Los Angeles is leading the nation's metropolitan cities in total number of homicides. Numbers are year-to-date through Nov. 20, 2002.

Los Angeles has become the murder capital of the nation, recording 592 homicides through Nov. 20, ahead of New York with 489. Although Los Angeles has the highest number of murders, Detroit and Philadelphia have slightly higher homicide rates per capita.

"This is the last category we want to be No. 1 in," McDonnell said.

The tough LAPD response was prompted by the series of murders in the 77th Division. Of the eight homicides in two weeks, five occurred along Western Avenue, including a killing and a retaliation killing at 83rd Street and Western.

As a result, Bratton summoned a meeting with key members of his command staff to develop a comprehensive plan to attack the problem.

"We are moving forward to have an impact on these gangs," said LAPD Capt. James Miller, 77th Division's commander.

McDonnell, who heads the panel, said his goal is to work closely with the community, and to adopt a multi-agency approach to combating gang violence.

He said commanders will be held accountable for what occurs in their areas, and will provide leadership to take back the streets.

"Area commanding officers are going to ensure that the deployment is heaviest on appropriate days and times of the day when highest levels of crime occurs," McDonnell said.

He also said detectives will respond to radio calls in which victims have been seriously hurt, to help ensure a thorough and complete investigation from the beginning.

"These are just some of the things that in the short term we will address," he said.

Police said they've identified some suspects, and have arrested two people, but on unrelated charges.

Some of the gang shootings are connected to drugs, and police sources said one of the most active gangs in the area -- the Rolling 60s Crips -- is thought to be responsible for some of the latest violence. It is one of the largest Crip factions, and the City Attorney's Office is working to get a court injunction against it.

The Rolling 60s gang deals rock cocaine and commits robberies and is connected to several Las Vegas casino robberies, police said.

"They're having a war, but I'm not sure who with," said a veteran LAPD officer who requested anonymity. "There's a lot of back and forth, a lot of narcotics sales."

Community members have rallied, and church leaders are expected to attend a three-day retreat this weekend to talk about organizing community night patrols.

About 200 people from the community say they expect to walk with a message of peace in coming weeks.

"The violence has escalated to all proportions of sanity," said the Rev. Cecil Murray of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Central Los Angeles. "We must stop the hysteria."

OK, so the cities with the most number of homocides are LA, NYC, and Chicago. But wait all those cities have pretty interesting handgun control laws. How can this be? Actually Detroit, with less homocides but a rate of 34.60 homocides per 100,000 people is pretty amazing.

Notice the correlation between demographics and homicide rates in these cities?

The LAPD puts out a "police blotter" statement every day, listing all homicides, officer-involved shootings, and even many other serious violent crimes - and it's rare going on almost-never that nonwhites aren't involved in each case.

The reality of these cities is that - no matter what gun laws nor "proactive policing" nor paramilitary policing they adopt - cities that are heavily-nonwhite and heavily-poor are doomed to social chaos.

GUN REVIEWS free from ad-money bias - emphasizing woman-friendliness of tested guns!

We need tougher laws against murder! It must be obvious to the Liberals in California.

The gang-bangers go on these turf wars because drugs are illegal and the government has decided that they (criminals) are the best suited to produce and distribute drugs rather than the drugstore.

The next time somebody hears that Albertsons and Rexall are machine-gunning each other's employees, ping me.

The actions of these gang-bangers have absolutely nothing to do with gun laws.

CCW is gun regulation. Better be carefull. According to the NRA and others gun laws actually work if they're crafted correctly. This in spite of the fact that there should be no gun laws.

In particular, we need to salute the ACLU in helping make L.A. No. 1. Also, we need to acknowledge the efforts of people like Maxine Waters who encourages people to hate the police rather than cooperate with them. Well done.

Wherever there are Democrats, there is murder and chaos. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Truth time, since the First Watts riot, the Black " leadership" in LA have openly attacked the LAPD. Well, looks like they won. Some victory.

These gang bangers are killing each other rather than the police. The problem here is caused by drug laws which created the black market. No prohibition, no black market, no organized criminal element.

One would think so, but not with the DIMocrats. Oh, no. we need even more expensive social programs to teach the underground right from wrong. Sheesh! Here in NY, I miss Giuliani.

They both should be legalized. Then the organized crime types go out of business and have to take up gainfull employment.

Mayor -Berg is doing his best to turn New York City into the POS it was before his predecessor ASAP, IMO. Now there are beggars everywhere and the criminal element smells opportunity. The previously repaired windows have been broken and the word is out on the street. But outrage from the sheeple self-loathing Dims is hardly to be expected.

Agree absolutely.

Gun laws affect only one type of person.
The Law abiding citizen.

Gun laws do not affect criminals as they do not obey the law(s).
Any laws.

The same people that commit carjackings and run the drug trade also keep and carry guns "illegally", as well as use them in violent acts.

(Why did I include carjacking?)
The old "car parrallel" thing.
Criminals also drive without licenses, uninsured, use stolen plates, Steal Cars, use those cars to transport and sell drugs, etc., etc., ad infinitum.

I saw a piece on "MSNBC Live investigates" tonight, concerning vehicle crime and car chases.
Toward the end they were showing this Laser Car Killer that shut down the vehicle from a distance.

The Host asked an "expert" why this GREAT IDEA wasn't being promoted and utilized.
The expert pointed out that it may "inconvenience" other drivers if the "shooter" missed, killing innocent driver's cars as well.
He then pointed out that someone would soon figure a way around the technology making it useless.

I wanted to jump onto the telephone and call these idiots to point out the analogy to guns and gun control.
All their damned safety locks and user recognition technology, and gun laws mean nothing.
Criminals just ignore the laws, go around the technology, or make it useless.

I cannot see how supposedly intelligent people can fail to see the parrallels in their arguments.

Gun Control Works!!!!

Why... Because Democrats = gun control = population control = slavery.

That is the end goal; to take everything yours and make it theirs.

'sup, Holmes?

I used to live in Hayward, CA on Princeton near Smalley Ave. One block over was 'A' st. which was occupied by the 'A St. North Side' chumps, punks, losers, idiots, @$$holes and general low life scumbags.

Twas a lovely place.

Just make sure you didn't go outside without your flak jacket on! I always said just give them a pile of weapons to pick from so they can all kill each other. They're as worthless as tits on a boar!
