Imagine certain aspects in this Act in the hands of the Clinton-Reno Justice Department.

Maybe. But a bright day for coordination of intelligence and routing out terrorist scum from our woodwork.

And a sad day for boards like this one. It's not much of a stretch that this could be deemed a "gathering place for terrorists" by future administrations. It's sad that republican cheerleaders are too short sighted to realize that it will happen.

A sad day for freedom in America.

Actually, this bill is fairly tame compared to the Patriot Act. I've read much of H.R. 5710, and now I'm gonna read the bill as actually signed by Bush - there are a few stinkers in this, but critics have also several exaggerated much of what is in this bill.

From Drudge:

SENATOR ASHCROFT HAD WARNED: 'KEEP
BIG BROTHER'S HANDS OFF THE
INTERNET': 'The [Clinton]
administration's interest in all
e-mail is a wholly unhealthy
precedent, especially given this
administration's track record on FBI
files and IRS snooping. Every medium
by which people communicate can be
subject to exploitation by those
with illegal intentions.
Nevertheless, this is no reason to
hand Big Brother the keys to unlock
our e-mail diaries, open our ATM
records, read our medical records,
or translate our international
communications' -- Ashcroft, Oct

A sad day for freedom in America.

Only if you're a terrorist or criminal.

"Senate Republican leader Trent Lott of Mississippi has already said that he wants some changes to be applied to the agency next year, and has gotten a pledge from House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., to revise certain provisions in the next Congress."

The agency isn't even set up yet, and already he wants changes. This is Lott getting ready to cave in to pressure from the former "plurality leader" and the Hildabeast. Union protected jobs will make any information coordinating agency totally worthless.

OUr national Guard was formed to protect our homeland from invasion. NOw it is our CIA strong arm "International police" The National Guard is now used as our militaries leading edge of cannon fodder in every conflict since 1940 when the US last sent commitioned marines to the beaches of Normandy and their death.

This new Dept of Homeland Security is being set up to fill the hole left by the National Guards original purpose. Only now it will be an internal covert information gathering agency, similar to what Hoover wanted back in the day. Instead of Communists we are searching for Islamic terrorists. Does anyone else see a pattern here?? I hear alot of people saying the same thing. Close our borders and clean house. I agree, we do not need this new agency, we don't need the four acronyms we have now (CIA, FBI, IRS, INS) They suck up money, can't find their own a$$, and have become havens for Americas surviving Organized crime.

The FBI has been the only agency to help in arresting criminals.

The CIA is a corrupt drug running agency hell bent on screwing up every foreign relationship we have ever had.

I challenge anyone here to find a local INS Dept that does not employ a majority of forgeigners. (The INS here currently employs 72% immegrants including their security dept.)

I don't think I have to mention the problems with our IRS.

So, what will the new DHS be??

I support President Bush 100%, yet reading some of the comments here I was reminded of something Benjamin Franklin said:
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Benjamin Franklin
"An Account of Negotiations in London for Effecting a Reconciliation Between Great Britain and the American Colonies" (22 Mar. 1775)

I hope, pray and trust President Bush isn't leading down the wrong path.

A sad day for freedom in America.

Indeed. Our individual responsibility for our own security has just been stolen by a collective in Washinton, DC.

After today, taking individual steps to protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors will be "suspect".

As I predicted on Sept. 12th right here on FR, "Only Nixon could go to China. Only Bush could turn America into Amerika." For those of you in Rio Linda, I meant that if clinton had tried this, we FReepers would have been up in arms. But since one of "our guys" did it, it's OK, right?

For some reason, that Buffalo Springfield song has been going through my head lately. You gotta' stop - hey - look around...

On his first working day after a four-nation tour of eastern Europe, President Bush planned to sign the new Department of Homeland Security into law Monday, marking the biggest overhaul in the federal government in more than 50 years.

Hitler is smiling.
