Saudi prince sticks with U.S. investments
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Nov 30, 2002 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Saudi billionaire Prince Walid bin Talal, chairman of an investment group, said Saturday that he would continue investment in the United States and any other country in the world, according to a press interview. The Saudi al-Watan daily quoted the businessman as saying he did not like to "politicize" his investments "because they are based on commercial, economic and financial objectives."
He said he would not withdraw his investments in the United States, as other Saudi investors have threatened to do after Washington accused some of them of financing terrorist organizations.
Prince Walid, King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz's nephew, said he was studying expanding some of his investments, but warned that the "continued campaign against the Saudis is causing panic among Saudi investors" in the United States.
He said he was exerting "great effort in huge investment in the American media to relay fair messages on the situation in the Middle East and the events in Palestine."
The businessman added that he had persuaded CNN to broadcast "the Israeli massacres of the Palestinian people, which led to Israel's boycott of the network, and I am always keen on showing our point of view in this media."
On his charity contributions, he said these always come in the form of "infrastructure projects," rather than financial donations to charity organizations.
Meanwhile, Prince Walid revealed Friday concluding the purchase of three new hotels, one in Switzerland, and two in Egypt, at a total cost of $220 million.
He said his 100 percent acquisition of the luxury Deborg Hotel in Geneva for $120 million was finalized two weeks ago, and that it would be modernized and managed by the Four Seasons chain, part of which he owns.
Prince Walid, 45, built a huge financial empire by acquiring troubled projects, and was named by Forbes magazine as the 11th richest man in the world with an estimated fortune of $20 billion.
