HERZLIYA, Israel -- When Prime Minister Ariel Sharon won a landslide primary victory over rival Benjamin Netanyahu last week on the day two terror attacks killed nine Israelis, many were surprised. They shouldn't be. The results of the election should help the West understand, finally, how Israelis have come to see the Palestinian problem in the past year. They don't believe any Israeli leader can fix the situation.

What Rubin fails to state is that Sharon has been totally ineffectual, that he has no desire or plan to defeat the enemy, and that thousands of Israelis have been killed or maimed on his watch.

If negotiations with the Palestinians don't succeed, Mr. Mitzna promises, he will withdraw from all Gaza and most of the West Bank, a strategy called separation or, in Mr. Mitzna's slogan, "Us, here; them, there." Most supporters of separation have no hope the Palestinians will make a negotiated peace.

I can't believe what a freakin' moron this guy is, living where he does! Arafat and his Pallies aren't content to stay "there." Doesn't this guy realize that the lunatics of the Islamic world (which is the majority) won't be content until "there" is all of what is now Israel?

But Israelis had enough of running the territories between 1967 and the mid-1990s. They'd rather be left alone.

Dead On. Barring the most extraordinary circumstances or compulsion, Israel will never again govern the territories as they did before Oslo. They've had their fill of that thankless task. Not that this will stop the Palestinians, however, from endlessly entoning "the occupation, the occupation, the occupation..."
