Need some help with my website (please)

Posted on 12/03/2002 2:33:19 PM PST by corlorde

Hi, I have a paid Homstead account through Homestead.com and, as usual, they are off line today. Does anyone know what the high heck is going on there? I host a website and it's very frustrating when I want to "get things done" that homestead is so unreliable.

Any help or suggestions would be nice.

Watch the newsgroup alt.www.webmaster for a bit, and see all the good, inexpensive hosting companies out there.

Over the years, we have found out how fast and easy it is to fire a bad hoster and move the sites suddenly, seamlessly overnight.(Unless you registered it with Network "Solutions"/Verisign.)

Ahh, the Free Market Forces to the rescue.

Although they have a decent interface for their web page developing....the software can be hinky.....on Dial-Up it can be maddening....double loading the Web Design Page...searching for un-wanted updates..etc.
I am hooked to them for 2 years....I'll look around again then. eMail me if you think I can help.
Good luck!

Can you give me a recommendation on a way to upload my website pages other than individually, a few at a time? I used to could use a microsoft upload program, but it doesn't work any more for some reason. Thanks in advance.

iNNERHOST.com is where I am at, and never once in two years have I been down.

sit-rep ...handles many sites under my umbrella, including the Marine Corps Toys for Tots for southeastern Michigan. Lotta bandwidth.

FYI...

you can upload to a website ftp server right out of microsoft windows explorer. put the ftp url in the address bar, hit enter, then when it comes up, right click on the left sidebar where it shows the name of the folder you are in, and select "login as" and enter your info there. Then you can either copy/past a file or folder, or drag and drop. Works as fast as WS_FTP And cuteftp.

Netfirms.com has some decent deals.

If you are maintaning a website you really need to spring for WS_FTP Pro. I believe they have a shareware one. You can FTP the lastest from ipswitch.com, or download from any of the sites like Tucows, etc.
My wife has a 500 page website, and can just select all the files, then start transferring them ALL and walk away.
It shows the remote site as well as your drive, and you can rename, etc.

Avoid "CuteFTP", as it has a reputation for being spyware.

I downloaded it, but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. It uploads it "somewhere", but not to my website. I got so frustrated that I gave up and took a nap. I'll tackle it again tomorrow. New technical things are hard for me to understand. But once I get it, I'm okay. Sure wish your wife were here with me. :0)

Sometimes the ISP that hosts your site will have tips on how to set it up. It is the most popular FTP program.
Usally you set the remote adress to some thing like "www.yoursite.com", or "ftp.yoursite.com", and you log in with your username and password just like e-mail.
Also, some ISP's need you to put your files in a "www.directory", for example, and not into the root directory.
