It's a new day when the Times can be clearly out professionaled by its tabloid rival the NY Daily News. The News has an official policy on the guilt of those convicted of the attack on the Central Park Jogger. The five are guilty and the recent admission of guilt by a lifer at Sing Sing doesn't exonerate them. Today the News ran with an Exclusive from the ER doc who treated the victim. The story fully supports the News' view, with impact. But on the facing page the News runs a full page story by columnist Mike Daly which questions the confessions, the verdicts, and describes how some facts were not presented at trial that may have resulted in reasonable doubt.

The editors of The News clearly have confidence in their writers, reporters, and readers to place a truly hot topic into the arena of public discourse. The Times and Howell Raines clearly do not have such confidence or courage. It's not even about being liberal or conservative. It's about being committed to the belief that the existence of competing ideas is a great strength of this Republic. It's about being a true professional journalist. Unhappily the Times no longer is.

"All the news that fits"

My private NYT motto for 30 years now. I actually programmed a mailroom system for the Times in the mid-70s (Carlstadt plant - now closed) and had this on my version of their sign-on screens.

when it is properly defined as clearly a racist attempt by the New York Times to prevent Tiger Woods from participating in the Master's tournament

I get the impression you say this with some level of jest, but its true. Why didn't they call on Phil Mickelson, #2 in the world, to boycot?

Free Republic has a similar policy with regard to "disapproved" sites like VDare and American patrol.
