Despite population growth, logging and other environmental threats, nearly half the land on Earth remains wilderness -- undeveloped and nearly unpopulated, according to a study released today. The study by 200 international scientists, the most comprehensive analysis ever done on Earth's wild places and population trends, was seen by some experts as a surprising cause for optimism. Biologists also viewed it as a warning, since only 7 percent of the wilderness is protected.

"nearly half the land on Earth remains wilderness "

...and I wonder what percentage of that is ruled by inner city gangs ;^)

Some parts of the wilderness are so full of nasty insects, snakes, animals or rough terrain that they are uninhabitable.  In looking at links about the recent total eclipse, I see that Australia's desert is full of snakes and other venomous creatures, has no water and gets to 122 degrees!

"I want my birds-eye candlenut coffee table anyway." After all, I certainly don't make that much difference. Just one little coffee table.

They also say something stupid like the jungles possibly have some plants that purportedly might hold many benefits for humans in the area of medicine, most of which we haven't had the time and technology to discover (yeah, right).

They are correct. Unfortunately the only scientists that God intended to discover these hidden treasures were murdered in the womb by the same people who supported this study

Why is it that the only creation environmentalists won't protect is the human baby?

`There is also an ethical and moral reason,'' Lovejoy said. ``We are all -- every amoeba, every person, every rhinoceros -- the end point of 4 billion years of evolution. You just don't snuff that out.''

I vote for snuffing out mosquitoes.

God put us here to be good stewards. If good stewardship requires removing some pests or cutting some jungle then we had better be getting on with it. We don't want to be derelict in our duties now do we?

The state of Texas has 261,914 square miles of land. That's 167,624,962 acres. The U.S. Bureau of the Census estimates that the population of the U.S. is currently at 288,639,900 individuals.

If we subdivided all of the land area of Texas into half acre lots, every human being in America could live in Texas, alone on their own half acre lot, with room left over for another 46,610,024 people.

That is how sparsely populated this country really is.

Why waste a half-acre for each person?

Alcatraz managed to fit two whole people into a 4 x 8 foot cell.

Funny that some people equate crowding with punishment and loss of freedom.

I think you've misunderstood the point of my post.

My point was, humans are not overrunning the earth like the enviro wack jobs would like us to believe.

Great news! 46% of Earth remains to be plundered!

Those numbers are bad.

Actually, 75% of the Earth's surface is wetlands waiting to be drained.

Man, that's gonna be some drain!

With sufficient global warming, we should be able to pump it through the hole at the North Pole without the pipes freezing, and into the hollows of the Earth.

As the sea levels drop, we may be aided in the endeavor by recovered Lemurian technology. Assuming, of course, we aren't thwarted in the attempt by the reawakened, cryogenic Celts.

It's a lot of wilderness, but there is a reason why it still exists. Too cold, too dry being two reasons. Useless land. The pristine ANWR wilderness is pristine because it is frozen and if it weren't frozen it would be dry desert.

Ask any pilot who has flown a single engine airplane accross the country on a routine basis. During the day I can tell you that about 80% of the continental US is void of any identifiable development

Boy, do I know this. I remember flying over Michigan with an engine that had a really nasty rattle at high RPM. As I kept a mental note of possible places to land, the pickins were pretty slim most of the time.

"That we are already down to only 46 percent is alarming."

Not at all, we only need 20% wilderness!

We need to harvest timber, build more fish hatcheries, recend the ESA, drill for oil in that vast wasteland called ANWR and also drill for oil off shore on all of our coasts!

Plus, every family needs to own an SUV with a V-8 engine!

Property Rights...Bump!

The earth will have lungs like an emphazema (sp?) ridden chain smoker.

I see you have bought into the liberal PC claim that we are destroying the environment by cutting down trees and developing areas. This is hogwash! There are more trees in North America today then there was when the pilgrims came over in the Mayflower. Every time we have a storm and lighting starts a forest fire we rush to put it out before it can do much damage. This didn't happen hundreds of years ago. When lighting started a forest fire back then it burned until it ran out of fuel or a rainstorm put it out.

I would say we probably have too many trees in the world today, not too few.

Two points: one, that would remove any doubt that Texas is the premier football state in the world; two, I would no longer enjoy the drive from Dallas to El Paso, unless there was a 120 lane freeway in both directions!

Just think what a metropolis Monahans would be!!! LOL!
