Whether free speech will be the law of the land everywhere - except in political campaigns - is the question at the heart of a lawsuit that opened in Washington, D.C., yesterday. Arguments continue today.
A three-judge panel of a federal district court will hear McConnell v. FEC, the first challenge to the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA), popularly called McCain-Feingold, the so-called campaign-finance-reform law signed by President Bush earlier this year.
