Thousands of state workers will be laid off as the state seeks to trim nearly half a billion dollars from its payroll next year, administration officials said Thursday.

State workers surviving the layoffs will be asked to share the state's fiscal pain by forgoing pay raises now scheduled to take effect in July.

Good. There goes one of the Dems justification for massive tax increases. Shuttering half the state bureaucracy here would fill the gap in the budget deficit and get the state on the road to recovery.

Today, Davis is scheduled to release his plan to cover $10 billion of the gap,

This article is all about CUTS which is all well and good if not way late. However, anyone wanna bet that when the plan is released today, there will be a significant TAX increase?

Any bets?

The question is whether the liberals in the State Legislature will accept ANY cuts. At a minimum the GOP will reject ANY budget that has NO cuts and ALL tax increases. Therein lies the makings of an impasse unless the Democrats in the State Legislature give ground.

"Bruce Blanning, speaking on behalf of engineers working for the state, also said the state could save money by eliminating outside contracts."

This is true. The state has to pay outside companies billions to do the work of state employees. Problems is, they end up paying twice because you can't fire the incompetent chair monkeys that work for the state. Some state workers are not completely incompetent, but they are the exception.

The old bait and switch trick. Old Greyout Davis promised the CA peasants everything that he obviously didn't have the budget to deliver, and now after the election fiscal reality sets in. Expect Greyout Davis to blame the cuts on those rascally Republicans.

Considering how many people Davis added to the state bureaucracy in the last four years this article should say TEN OF THOUSANDS OF STATE WORKERS TO BE LAID OFF.

...Old Greyout Davis...

Just heard on NPR 15 minutes ago that the Cali taxpayers are going to build A NEW GOVERNOR'S MANSION out in West Sacto.

Why stop there? Since he has destroyed your state, why don't you folks over on the wrong side of the Nevada border buy that rat-bastard a vacation home in Beijing or Havanna or somewhere, as well? Really, it's the least you can do.

I feel sorry for all Cali Freepers and True Americans of every stripe, I really do.

From Reason Public Policy Institute -

"Between 1998 and 2001, state government expenditures increased by more than 35 percent. The state's budget deficit is now larger than the entire budgets of most states. Moreover, the state added more than 25,000 new state employees--a larger increase than the next three largest states COMBINED."

http://www.rppi.org/californiabudget.html

Fire all 25,000 state employees and your talkin' some serious dough.

...listening to NPR while Rush is on?...

A friend borrowed my van. He listens to NPR for the twisted entertainment value. He left the radio tuned there. Sick, I know, but he is seeking treatment.

And, quite frankly, Rush doesn't really impress me much. I don't watch football, I don't play golf, and I don't smoke cigars.

Call me un-American, if you wish.

"I don't think anyone wants DMV lines any longer," Hard said.

No doubt the most visible employees will be cut the most. Squeeze the taxpayer into ponying up more money.

I think this is so darn funny. The California State Employees Union endorsed Gray Davis and now Davis is going to slash and burn state jobs. Don't you think that's funny?!

Just heard on NPR 15 minutes ago that the Cali taxpayers are going to build A NEW GOVERNOR'S MANSION out in West Sacto.

There was an article posted on that, and it said it was going to be privately funded, no tax dollars!
