The Mi-24, the first helicopter to enter service with the Russian Air Force as an assault transport and gunship, was developed on the basis of the Mi-8's propulsion system. Additional missions include direct air support, antitank, armed escort, and air to air combat. The helicopter was used extensively in the Afghanistan War, becoming the "signature" weapon of the conflict. The Mi-24 is a close counterpart to the American AH-64 Apache, but unlike this and other Western assault helicopters it is also capable of transporting up to eight troops. The Russians have deployed significant numbers of HINDs in Europe and have exported the HIND to many third world countries.

bump for the flying tanks :)

WOW! This completely re-defines nose-art. I suppose this is merely the logical extension of painting shark's teeth on P-38s.

That may explain this story from October:
What Is the Huge Bird Flying Over Manokotak, Alaska?
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/777716/posts
"gigantic eagle type bird" "bronze color" wing span "14 to 15 feet" (Hind wingspan 6.5 meters - about 20 feet)

I first saw those pictures on Art Bell's site. They were up only for about ten hours. Then they vanished mysteriously. I suspect somebody in the military objected to them being put on display.

I didn't have the answer to your question. Thanks !
To: MeeknMing
I thought that was the old Soviet "Hind." Kind of an antique by now, isn't it?
And WHO is flying them in Afghanistan?

Love that helicopter!
Very easy on the crew, and rugged.
Its downfall is that it has a very conscripted hover capability. At cruising speed, something like 30% of the required lift comes from the wings.
It's sort of a gyrocopter rather than a helicopter, actually.
But I like it!

Actually, a dedicated US OPFOR outfit has a couple of them. I forget where they got them, but the mysterious disappearance must have started a couple of unlucky East Bloc snake drivers...
