CommScope Inc., a Hickory-based cable manufacturer that employs 2,800 people worldwide, will lay off 6 percent to 7 percent of its work force, a move the company says is in response to the economic slowdown.
The layoffs, which will affect between 168 and 196 people, will primarily occur at CommScope's Claremont and Newton plants. A company spokeswoman would not disclose the number of employees at the two plants, citing competitive reasons.
Both hourly and salaried personnel will lose their jobs. Employees will be offered severance packages with outplacement services.
CommScope says the layoffs are expected to take place in January. Most employees whose positions are being eliminated will be notified over the next few weeks.
"Due to the uncertain business environment, we had used reduced work schedules and rotating layoffs to balance our work force with customer demand during most of 2002," says Brian Garrett, the company's chief operating officer. "However, given the ongoing challenging business conditions, we believe that this permanent work force reduction is necessary."
