Cheney's Private Discussions

U.S. District Judge John Bates told the General Accounting Office on Monday to mind its business -- which is auditing Congress, not vetting the Bush Administration's energy proposals on behalf of the President's political opponents.

At the urging of seven Democratic lawmakers, including Presidential aspirant Joe Lieberman, the GAO sued Vice President Dick Cheney earlier this year for not releasing records from his energy task force consultations. The White House maintained that it had a right to private policy discussions, just like its predecessors. And to the chagrin of Democrats and a press corps eager to paint the Bush team as overly hush-hush, the court agreed.
