I had been following our new President's crimes and corruption spree by reading and posting to Prodigy's Whitewater bulletin board at night and on weekends. Seems like I remember it was a little more than nights and weekends. Heh heh.

Thanks for sharing this, I've always wondered how FR started out. God bless Jim Robinson and all the others that bust their asses to make this such a great site!

Thanks for posting. I didn't know all this, although I've never had any big issues with how FR is run and have contributed to share in the expenses. What an inspiring story about a great American family.

This is my favorite picture from the March for Justice, October 31, 1998. That event changed many of our lives...

Thanks for this posting...I must have missed it the first time around. I found FR via The Drudge Report in 1998...and knew I would soon become addicted...lol

I remember reading this before, and thinking this is someone I need to watch, because he hit a bell in my mind. Maybe this was reprinted somewhere. But it is entirely possible I have been around all that time. I know lurked forever, and signed up as Egads in June 98... until I got booted by CAL for calling Keyes a jerk... LOL Seeing this again, I can't tell you what a great ride this place has been, and it isn't over by a long shot.... Lets Ride Again...LOLOL

Thanks for posting this. I read some account earlier but now have this one bookmarked for reference.
During the next fund drive I would dearly like to see more people contributing. I was stunned to see how few from my own state did contribute, compared to the total numer of FReepers on our list.
I would like to see Jim receive more revenue personally from FReeper contributions and never would view that as being ripped off. I appreciate FR and would consider it a tremendous loss if FR shut down.

I wrote the forum software and launched the Free Republic forum in February 1997. I was the only poster for a few months, . . .From one feisty, stubborn acorn . . . .

...If we can not fund Free Republic, she goes under and that's that. Now if anyone else ever accuses me again of being a crook, just beware. I'm gonna hunt you down and beat you senseless with my cane.
Jim Robinson
LOL ! Gotta love it !!

Thanks for posting this. I found FR shortly after it showed up on Drudges website & have been happily lurking or posting ever since. I am ashamed to say I have only been donation for the last couple of years.

And we've only just begun. You ain't seen nuthin' yet!
Words cannot express my thankfulness for FR to JR, and if the right six numbers, or sudden wealth should ever come my way, you won't have to worry about that debt load Jim, nor operational problems. And I'm sure there are goodly number of other FReepers out there that feel the same way. No sinister plot there either.

Thanks for reposting this history.
I enjoyed re-reading it and I'm sure many new FReepers will, too.
Free Republic has become a powerful force for conservatism in this country and for that reason there are many who would like to shut us down.
We will not let that happen!
If we all give just a little, Free Republic will continue and that force for conservatism will grow stronger.

Well, I'm working double shifts seven days a week for Free Republic Talk about a cushy job - spending the whole day logged on to FR!
(Just kidding! No flames, please!!) :-)

"but for those of you who are spreading the gruesome rumors of Jim Robinson ripping off the FReepers, here's the real accounting of Free Republic"I admit: I read most of the article, but also skimmed some of it....it's great to read the history of FR....but WHOM has been accusing Jim of ripping off FReepers?? Lemme attem!!
