New driver's license rules intended to check terrorism are unconstitutionally unfair to temporary foreign visitors and veiled Muslim women, attorneys for immigrant groups told a Minnesota Court of Appeals panel Thursday. But a state lawyer defending the rules said they are a legal and necessary measure to safeguard all Minnesotans from serious and imminent threats of more attacks like those of Sept. 11.

A driver's license is a privilege not a right. If an applicant doesn't want to do what's necessary to earn the priviege, then she can take a cab.

Where's the unfairness? As a white, male US citizen, I'm required to produce two forms of ID and have my picture taken when I get a driver's license, why should some non citizen temporary imigrant have any different requirements? Good lord these immigrants should consider themselves lucky they don't have to specially register with the police as is the case in some Islamic countries.

In an interview, Noteboom said the rules exclude many legal-immigration documents and are inconsistent with federal law.

If these documents are inconsistent with Federal law how are they legal? Documents inconsistant withthe law are by definition illegal or non-legal.

It doesn't say the documents are inconsistent with federal law - it says the rules are.

The purpose of a driver's license is to identify you in the context of driving and insurance (its also a de-facto identity card for other purposes, but let's not get into that now). The purpose of a mask, or veil, is to hide the distinguishing characteristics of your identity. The two do not mix. Even the Lone Ranger would have had to take it off if he wanted to get a license so he could drive a car and give Silver a rest.

The behavior of muslim females in St. Paul/ Mpls seems to me to be on the borderline of bold- the way the younger boys and girls meet at certain areas of the Mall of America checking each other out. There are no shy muslim women here, too modest to even get their picture taken for an ID.

Yes they wear some sort of scarf thingy, which many of them modify to look like a fashion accessory, but I have never seen NOT one woman wearing a tent or burkah or full veil unless she got put up to it by an activist group.

Even nuns get their picture taken. Why the deviation for muslims especially considering the exception is not even being requested?

Thanks.
I read it a couple of weeks ago.
A really well written rant.
And no that's not really a bad thing.
