Everyone assumes Lott's comments related to the 1948 Dixiecrats deals with the issue of civil rights. However, in 1948 the state of Isreal was established with the blessings of Truman. Zionism was a hot issue. Now imagine the world without Isreal.
Am I wrong to make this correlation?

Now imagine the world without Isreal. Since Thurmond would not have taken office until 1949 I don't have to.

I believe that in the case of the establishment of the state of Israel, Truman was going along for the ride - this was a British/French move and Truman could not object. Any of the candidates for President in 1948 would have been a part of the establishment of the state of Israel.
