Other than that why would a straight person even want to go to such a bar? To listen to the music?

Actually, yes. The dance music and the DJs in gay bars do tend to be better, more interesting and experimental. the same stuff filters out to the mainstream in six months, but the really new stuff tend to be played at the gay bars first.
At least that was the case when I was in college in the 80's. It was no big deal, just a good place to go dancing and listening to what's new in club music.
