On Fox News Sunday, they mentioned a statement put out by Lott's office in response to Nickle's announcement. They called Nickles call for new elections something like "blatant opportunism." The gloves are off! May the better man (who in my mind would be pretty much any GOP Senator other than Lott) win!

The exact quote by Lott's office was that Nickles statement "is a cynical exercise in opportunism." In other words, Trent Lott is scared to death of a Nickles challenge to his leadership because he knows he will probably lose. In fact, Nickles statement is what we would expect from a principled conservative leader who has the best interests of the GOP at heart. If Lott did as well he would resign. Now, the real risk is this--too many challengers to Lott where the anti-Lott vote is divided two or three ways allowing Lott to eke out a narrow victory with as few as 18 votes. That said, I still don't think he reaches that threshold in the event of a three way. Without the President's support, Lott is toast.

And when the conservatives of the South have had enough Bush is toast. Pandering to racist RATS and not standing up for the people who actually VOTED for Bush will not work any longer either.

If this causes Republicans to lose another Senate seat I hope you all are happy that Hillary Clinton just won another step in her ladder to the White House.

If Lott were smart, he'd step down in exchange for somebody getting to be leader who might treat Lott well. When Trent loses this challenge, he'll be lower on the totem pole than Coleman.
