The overreach of the Left is well underway.

Yes, it's a hard call on what the GOP response to this should be. Do they...

1. Allow the most rabid members of the left (like Tucker) continue to be the face of the Democrat Party, or

2. Enjoin the debate and refute the charges as a long term, formal strategy.

Right after the Lott gaffe, I leaned toward 2.

But after observing the feeding frenzy of the GOP haters, I think 1. might be the way to go. Let them foam at the mouth. In painting the whole south with the brush of racism, they'll drive every single white person down there to the GOP.

Cynthia Tucker's wrong to tar and feather all conservatives as racists. In the rarerified circles in which she travels I bet she hasn't met a conservative worthy of the name. Segregationists? I'm hard pressed to think of a Southern Republican who is one aside from the dubious exception of Lott. Neo-confederates?? The news must have slipped by Ms. Tucker there are a number of black neo-confederates and one in fact is walking all over the South with the much maligned Confederate Battle Flag in hand. Immigration? Most Americans want more, not fewer restrictions on immigration and not all of the are white. No thoughtful person in America claims that racism has been eliminated. But in the 50 years since the civil rights movement's hey-day, its virtually impossible to respectfully advocate, much less than defend racism in America. The fact more conservatives than liberals denounced Lott's statement should have been taken by Tucker as a sign of just how far America's come in relations between the races. Although we still have a ways to go, you think she would be heartened by all the changes that have occured since the 60s. Some people are so wrapped up in their own prejudices that they won't or can't see what's in front of their eyes and its just too bad Tucker is so wrapped up in the comfortable conservative = racism syllogism that she can't see today's Party Of Lincoln for the open and tolerant party that it has truly become.

Precisely. Go with option one.

The Left believes those on the Right to be racist. People on the right and in the middle know better.

That's two-thirds of the electorate growing weary of the crocodile tears. Its no accident that it this same two-thirds that carried the last election.
