Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said Sunday he had warned North Korea in 1994 the United States would destroy its nuclear reactor unless it agreed to freeze its operations.

He then invited members of the press corps to "go ahead, punch my gut!" in an apparent attempt to demonstrate his physical fitness.

Clinton went on to point out that then North Korean President Kim Il-Sung declined an invitation to a personal duel "mano a mano", and that, during a secret meeting in 1994, he "drank ole' Kim under the table".

Mr. Clinton closed his remarks with a poetic reading, whose authorship he attributed to himself:

I'm sure the Memoirs of Bill Clinton will be filled with all the things he didn't do, but had planned to do.
