KOFU -- A corrupt Yamanashi Prefecture public servant and his predecessor who taught him how to line his own pockets face charges for misappropriating tens of millions of yen in taxpayers money between them, it was learned Sunday.
The Isawa Municipal Government is poised to file criminal complaints with prosecutors, accusing the unnamed duo of embezzling farm subsidies that were supposed to have been used for the promotion of local fruits.
Isawa Mayor Masanao Ogino is furious about the incident. As the person responsible for the use of taxpayers money, I cant forgive the act as it damages Isawas image as a town of fruits.
The municipal government suspects that the former official may have advised his successor to embezzle part of the 15.1 million yen that it sets aside each year to provide subsidies to an organization promoting the consumption of locally grown grapes.
The former employee embezzled tens of millions of yen over a five-year period from fiscal 1994, town officials said. However, the exact amount he had pocketed has not been determined yet.
His successor pocketed about 9 million yen over the following three-year period, they allege.
The municipal government launched the campaign to promote public relations on locally grown grapes in the 1970s, town officials said.
"Town of Fruits" alert.
Ah, but he hid it so well.
"Fruity seppuku" bump....
I was thinking the San Francisco and the taxpayer funded sex changes.
