SCOTLAND Yard has warned of a possible Christmas bombing campaign by dissident Irish Republican terrorists, BBC News has reported. Deputy assistant commissioner and head of the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch (SO13), Peter Clarke, has asked the public to remain vigilant - officers are particularly keen to hear from people who have property or storage space to let and whose suspicions may have been aroused. Dissident groups including the Real IRA have been hit hard in a series of anti-terrorist operations in Northern Ireland and on the British mainland this year, and it is feared they might attempt to launch a morale-boosting attack in response.
The latest warning is not thought to be linked to a specific threat, however. Mr Clarke said: "The threat from Irish dissident republican terrorism continues to be of great concern to us. "During the festive period - which in the past has been targeted by terrorist groups - we need to public to be extra cautious."
